Karstens wins pitchers' duel in series opener

HOUSTON -- In his only start against Houston last year, Jeff Karstens held a
one-run lead entering the sixth inning before allowing four runs in a losing
effort. He made sure that wouldn't happen again on Tuesday night.
Karstens took a one-run lead into the sixth inning again, but put the Astros
down in order this time, outdueling Houston starter Bud Norris to propel the
Pirates to a 1-0 win at Minute Maid Park.
Karstens allowed just three hits in 6 2/3 innings, marking the second
consecutive game he held his opponent scoreless. Karstens has surrendered
just one earned run in his last 22 2/3 innings pitched.
Norris was equally tough, striking out nine Pirates in seven innings. The
only run he allowed was an RBI single to Garrett Jones in the second inning.
Neil Walker began the second inning with a single, and advanced to second
base on a wild pitch before Jones knocked him in. Walker has hit safely in
each of his last 10 road games.
The Astros threatened with runners on first and second base with one out in
the bottom of the eighth inning. Jose Veras then induced a flyout to center
field by pinch-hitter Jason Michaels and another flyout to left field by
Michael Bourn to end the inning.
The Pirates had chances to expand their lead with runners in scoring position
later in the second inning and in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings.
Brandon Wood drew a two-out walk after Jones stole second base in the second
inning to put runners on first and second base before Michael McKenry flied
out to right field to end the frame.
Pittsburgh began the sixth inning with consecutive singles by Andrew
McCutchen -- who extended his hitting streak to 13 games -- and Walker,
before the next three Pirates were retired.
McCutchen stole second base with one out in the eighth inning and advanced to
third base on the throw, which sailed into center field. Walker then struck
out and Jones grounded out to second base to end the threat.
