Team president Frank Coonelly had Dan Fox, the Pirates' statistical guru,
build a computer model to illustrate the impact: The Pirates' chance of
making the playoffs increased 13 percent.

"For teams like us, it's a positive because it opens up another chance to get
in," closer Joel Hanrahan said. "But I really think this was done because of
the AL East."
"The best part is that the games mean so much more all year," Hanrahan
continued. "And all you have to do is get in, like we saw with the Cardinals
last year."
