[情報] Showalter dismissed by Rangers
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Rangers announced Wednesday morning that Buck Showalter
has been dismissed after four years as manager.
The Rangers had asked Showalter to resign but he declined. The 2004 American
League Manager of the Year, Showalter had three years remaining on his
contract.
The Rangers held a press conference Wednesday afternoon at Ameriquest Field.
"Buck has been a tremendous asset to this organization," general manager Jon
Daniels said. "He worked hard both on and off the field with the best
interests of the Rangers in mind. However, we thought it best at this time
for a fresh perspective."
The move came after Showalter met with owner Tom Hicks and general manager
Jon Daniels on Tuesday night. There was also concern that Showalter's
relationships with his players was having an impact on the club's success.
That was the No. 1 topic of discussion on Tuesday night.
"I have the utmost respect for Buck Showalter," Rangers owner Tom Hicks said.
"He is extraordinarily committed to the game of baseball, and he has been an
excellent representative of the Texas Rangers."
Bench coach Don Wakamatsu is considered a strong candidate to replace
Showalter. He has been on Showalter's staff over the past four years and has
acted as manager before. Showalter was suspended for four games in August,
and the Rangers won three out of four from the Detroit Tigers under
Wakamatsu.
Wakamatsu, 43, has four years of Minor League managerial experience while in
the Arizona Diamondbacks farm system from 1997-2000.
Boston Red Sox third base coach DeMarlo Hale, a former coach for the Rangers,
could also get consideration, as could Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo.
Trey Hillman, the former Rangers farm director who has managed in Japan the
past four years, could also be a candidate.
Hillman was interviewed for the job at the same time as Showalter four years
ago but could not get out of a commitment to manage in Japan.
A Rangers official said the club will take its time in looking for a new
manager.
Showalter had been the Rangers manager for four years. He was American League
Manager of the Year in 2004 after the Rangers went 89-73. But they followed
that up by going 79-83 in 2005 and 80-82 this year, missing the playoffs for
the fourth straight season under Showalter and the seventh straight year
overall.
Showalter was hired on Oct. 11, 2002 and given a four-year contract. The
Rangers were 319-329 during his four years. He was given a three-year
contract extension after the 2004 season through 2009.
