ARLINGTON -- Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo has declined to be
interviewed for the club's managerial opening, general manager Jon Daniels
said Monday.
"Rudy told me he'd prefer to remain our hitting coach, as that's where his
heart is, rather than be considered for the manager position," Daniels said.
"As such, he won't be interviewed in our search. I think Rudy's capable of
managing someday, but I'm happy he's on our side, regardless of which
position it's in. He's as well thought of as it gets in this business."
Dugout coach Don Wakamatsu remains the leading candidate for the position
that came open when the Rangers let go manager Buck Showalter at the end of
the season.
Trey Hillman, who was the Rangers' farm director in 2002 and has been
managing in Japan the past four years, is also a strong candidate and is
expected to interview after the Japanese playoffs are over.
Other possibilities include Oakland third base coach Ron Washington, Angels
pitching coach Bud Black and former Florida Marlins manager Joe Girardi. The
Rangers are not expected to pursue former Major League managers Dusty Baker
and Lou Piniella.
