接下來談到今年的FA了,Pitchers Vicente Padilla, Adam Eaton and Kip Wells, catcher Rod Barajas, utilityman Mark DeRosa and outfielders Gary Matthews Jr. and Carlos Lee,目前來說老闆傾向於中性吧, 還是會盡力跟以上的球員繼續,但是似乎聽不出來有多麼強力的企圖。 』 所以以我們來說,像 Matthews and Lee就是屬於A級,而向 Barajas and DeRosa 就是在B級中,好玩的是Padilla 比較難預測,可能是A 或 B。大概是這樣~獻醜了 附全部文章,請大家慢慢欣賞囉~ Right now, Rangers bench coach Don Wakamatsu has little to do but sit around and wait. He played golf on Tuesday, had lunch with general manager Jon Daniels on Wednesday and has had a lot of time to think. "I was joking with J.D. that I made a big mistake," Wakamatsu said. "By the time they get around to me, they're going to be pretty good at interviewing people." The Rangers have yet to interview Wakamatsu for their managerial opening. He is one of five candidates to replace Buck Showalter, who was dismissed earlier this month. The Rangers interviewed Oakland third base coach Ron Washington, New York Mets third-base coach Manny Acta and Phillies Triple-A manager John Russell last week. The process is on hold until Trey Hillman is done managing the Nippon Ham Fighters in the Japan Series. His team has a 2-1 lead through three games over the Chunichi Dragons. "We're happy with the interviews with all the guys so far," Daniels said Wednesday. "They've all come as advertised or better. A lot of references have called on their behalf." Daniels said he is "most likely" committed to these five candidates but added, "I'm not 100 percent committed to that. There is always the possibility of talking to somebody else, but I don't have anything planned right now." Hillman presents some logistical problems if the Fighters win. There is the victory parade, and then the team would go on to play in the Asian Games against teams from China, Taiwan and South Korea. "The reality is I may not be able to meet face-to-face with Trey," Daniels said. "I don't have the time to travel over there and Trey can't travel out of there. He has other obligations. There's a good chance he'll be interviewed by phone." Wakamatsu will be the last candidate interviewed. He remains eager to make his pitch and there is still a perception out there that he is the leading candidate because of his relationship with Daniels. "I would like for it to be that way," Wakamatsu said with a laugh. "I think if you have a checklist of what you want from a manager, one would be the relationship with the general manager, the confidence level and the trust factor. "No. 2 is not having to learn the players and the talent level. The learning curve there is good. The other thing is building trust and a relationship with the most influential guys on the club. I think I've done that. I think there's a phenomenal relationship in place and we can build on that honesty and trust." Wakamatsu understands that relationships with players may be the No. 1 factor in who is hired as manager. "I think you need to be positive, be able to communicate and provide the kind of support system that allows a player to succeed," Wakamatsu said. "You look at a guy like Jim Leyland, I think his success comes from being open and honest with players, telling them the way it is. You communicate by being positive and being crystal clear. "These players are big boys, they want to know where they stand. Sometimes if you're not brutally honest with them, that makes it worse." Asked if he thought he could win in Texas, Wakamatsu said, "The one thing I can't do is stand up like Lou Piniella did with the Cubs and say we're going to win and sell that. What I will promise is that even though you can only play to a certain level, you have to play to that certain level every night. That's the secret with teams like Oakland and Minnesota. "We do have a strong nucleus. I think we have five or six pitchers on our staff now that have a chance to be special, I think our pitching is farther along than people give us credit for and we've got a great core of players. I think what we need is to develop an understanding of what it takes to win." Free agent talks: The nucleus still needs help. Pitchers Vicente Padilla, Adam Eaton and Kip Wells, catcher Rod Barajas, utilityman Mark DeRosa and outfielders Gary Matthews Jr. and Carlos Lee can all become free agents. Daniels has spent time talking to their representatives. Padilla and Matthews seem to be of particular interest. But the Rangers will brace for the possibility of all of them going into the open market rather than reaching a quick deal. "Probably the most feedback and dialogue has been with Padilla," Daniels said. "One thing we've heard across the board is they all would like to stay here, in a perfect world. The hard part is defining a perfect world. There's a gray area with all of them between what the top of the market is and what their range is. "I think these guys want to see what the market is. We're pursuing contingency plans at every spot, but we're certainly open to guys coming back." Compensation still in play: The new labor agreement assures the Rangers of compensation if they offer salary arbitration to Type A and Type B free agents. Teams get two draft picks if they lose a Type A free agent and one draft pick if they lose a Type B player. The Rangers admitted to some nervousness over trading for Lee in July amid rumors that compensation would be eliminated completely. "We knew at the trade deadline there was a gray area whether compensation picks would still be there," Daniels said. "But the club was in a competitive situation and we opted to roll the dice." The free agent rankings aren't out yet, but the Rangers expect Matthews and Lee to be Type A players and Barajas and DeRosa to be Type B. Padilla could go either way. The one change with Type B players in the compensation is a sandwich draft pick between the first and second rounds. Previously, it was a draft pick from the other team. That could be significant. The Rangers took pitcher Eric Hurley 30th overall in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft with the pick they received from the Atlanta Braves for losing John Thomson. Hurley is now one of their top Minor League prospects. Under the new system, they probably would have drafted eight spots later. The Rangers will not get compensation for Eaton. "We'll just have to sign him," owner Tom Hicks said in expressing his support for the new agreement. "I love the fact that we've been able to reach an agreement with the Players Association without going through the difficulties we've gone through in the past. It's very positive for baseball, positive for the players, for the teams and the fans. "Both sides realize it's insane to keep hurting the business. The reality is baseball is extremely healthy. We've seen significant growth in the industry and interest is growing. Salaries continue to grow but as a portion of revenue, it's gone down significantly for four or five years, and that's allowed the industry to be healthy. As long as revenues continue to grow, the players will continue to benefit." T.R. Sullivan is a reporter for MLB.com.
