Mailbag: Does Texas have a No. 1?
Free agents are now allowed to talk money with any team. Rangers general
manager Jon Daniels, after having hired a manager, is on his way to the GM
meetings in Florida.
The offseason is just beginning to get rolling. The Rangers look for two
starting pitchers, a center fielder and possibly some offensive help in the
middle of the order.

It appears to me, after careful consideration, that the Rangers have not
drafted a pitcher who could become a real "ace" on the staff. Is there a
pitcher in the system that will fill that role? And by "ace", I mean someone
who can win 20-plus games, start winning streaks and stop losing streaks. I
don't see a single pitcher in the Minor League system that meets that
criteria. Am I missing someone?
-- Richard N., Irving, Texas
First of all, remember that there have been just 44 20-game winners in the
past 11 seasons, an average of almost four per season. Remember also that
Derek Lowe, Esteban Loaiza, Jamie Moyer, Russ Ortiz, Jose Lima, Rick Helling
and Denny Neagle were among those who won 20 games at least one time in the
past 11 years.
Anyway, one question I like to ask Rangers officials is: "The 2011 American
League Cy Young winner is in the Rangers system right now. Who is it?"
The usual answer is Eric Hurley. Understand nobody is predicting that, they
are just answering my question who is the most likely.
Hurley was 8-7 with a 3.53 ERA in 24 starts between Class A Bakersfield and
Double-A Frisco last year. He was 3-1 with a 1.95 ERA in six starts at Frisco
before being shut down in mid-August with a strained ribcage.
He was the 30th overall pick in the 2004, compensation for the Braves signing
John Thomson. Hurley is 6-foot-4, pitched in the Futures Game and turned 21
in August.
He has the best chance of being that No. 1 guy. John Danks is still
developing as a left-handed starter, and I still think he'll get stronger
physically. I think he could be a No. 2 or 3 guy in a rotation. That's best
case. Thomas Diamond has that chance as well, especially if he comes up with
a second really good pitch. Edinson Volquez has a lot of work ahead of him.
So, your perception is pretty sound, with the possible exception of Hurley.
Derek Lowe, Esteban Loaiza, Jamie Moyer, Russ Ortiz, Jose Lima,
With all the talk of Vernon Wells wanting to play in Texas -- being that he
still does in fact live in Arlington -- do you think the Rangers would
consider making a bid at him?
-- John C., Coppell, Texas
Wells coming to Texas has been a long-standing rumor. He is from Arlington,
and he is best friends with Rangers shortstop Michael Young. Wells is just
what the Rangers need as a center fielder. He can also be a free agent after
2007 and there are no signs that the Blue Jays are going to sign him.
But ...
The Blue Jays finished second last year, ahead of the Boston Red Sox, after
spending a lot of money in the offseason. They have some holes to fill --
outfielder Frank Catalanotto and pitcher Ted Lilly are free agents -- but
they still don't appear to be rebuilding. They want to contend in 2007.
So a Wells-for-prospects deal seems out, especially considering the Blue Jays
could always do that in July if they are out of contention.
The Rangers don't have a front-line starting pitcher to trade, one that could
step in and be guaranteed of winning 14-16 games. They have extra bullpen and
some young starters, but the Blue Jays could probably do better elsewhere in
order to compete in 2007.
Young? The Blue Jays could use a shortstop, but take the sentiment out it.
Young is still signed for two more years in a largely favorable great deal
for the Rangers. That doesn't make sense for the Rangers even before you get
to the intangibles.
Mark Teixeira? He's under the Rangers control for two more years, although at
a much higher price. Teixeira for Wells has been a rumor for years, but the
Blue Jays have big bats in third baseman Troy Glaus and first baseman Lyle
Overbay.
Wells seems a better fit for them and it's unlikely they'll be able to afford
Teixeira in 2008 either. It's hard for me to see a match between the Rangers
and the Blue Jays unless I'm missing something that Daniels
What are the chances of re-signing Mark DeRosa for another year or two, or
even a long-term contract?
-- Jennifer M., Houston
One of the obstacles right now is the Rangers don't appear to be in position
to give DeRosa an everyday job at an infield position. There are other teams
in better position to do that and pay him in an appropriate manner.
Would you say that there is almost a 100 percent chance that Barry Zito will
come to the Rangers or is that something that is all talk and no action?
-- Taylor S., Marietta, Ga.
Zito seems destined for the big stage of New York City, either the Mets or
the Yankees. The Mets appear to be the leading candidate because their
pitching coach, Rick Peterson, was with Zito in Oakland, and they are
supposedly very close. That may play bigger than Zito's friendship with
Rangers manager Ron Washington, but the size of the paycheck is also going to
have much to do with where Zito pitches next year.
Will the addition of an inexperienced manager in Washington keep free agents
[pitching or defense] away, at least this year, to see how he works out?
-- Shannon A., Carrollton, Texas
Two paraphrase at least two movies: "If you show them the money, they will
come."
Why don't the Rangers go after Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens and then Barry
Bonds? That would probably be the best way to go now that Buck Showalter is
gone.
-- Tanner E., Brownfield, Texas
I think you just committed $50 million of Tom Hicks' money to three people.
Do you think Washington will run a little bit more next year than Buck did
last year? I think the Rangers need to be more aggressive than they have in
the past. Do you see that happening?
-- Aaron B., Whitewright, Texas
Much depends on what the Rangers do in center field. If they go with somebody
like Juan Pierre or Freddy Guzman, then the Rangers could do more running.
Many readers complained that Showalter didn't do more running.
Washington said he's adaptable. If he has the big bats, he'll sit back and
wait for the three-run home run. If the offense is struggling, he'll try some
things to get it going. I think Ian Kinsler is going to end up stealing 20-30
bases in his best year.
Looking at the previous teams Showalter has been with, and how they did the
season after he got fired, does that mean the Rangers will win the World
Series next year?
-- Senna N., Arlington, Texas
Absolutely. Me? I've mortgaged the house and cashed in the college fund.
Anybody want to buy my old baseball card collection?
