After struggling to keep his batting average above the Mendoza line for most of the fall, Travis Metcalf came on strong during the stretch run for the Grand Canyon Rafters. Metcalf's Arizona Fall League season reached rock bottom on Oct. 21 when he was hitting .132, but he has boosted it over 120 points to a respectable .256. The 24-year-old third baseman batted .500 (7-for-14) over the last week for the AFL West-leading Rafters. His best game came during a 14-5 rout over Mesa on Nov. 14 when he went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double and three RBIs. Grand Canyon will look for Metcalf to anchor the bottom of the lineup as it heads into the AFL Championship game against the Phoenix Desert Dogs on Saturday. Here is how the rest of the Texas Rangers' prospects are doing in various fall and winter leagues. His ERA climbed to 12.41. LHP John Koronka -- Koronka left the team early last week after making five starts. The 26-year-old southpaw was 0-1 with a 5.69 ERA in 17 innings. He struck out four batters and held opponents to a .266 batting average. C Kevin Richardson -- Richardson played in one game this week, going 1-for-2 with a double and a strikeout on Nov. 10. He left the team on Nov. 11 and finished his AFL season with a .278 average and nine RBIs. RHP Danny Touchet -- Touchet appeared in two games, striking out two and walking two over three scoreless innings. The 24-year-old right-hander pitched a perfect inning to get the win as the Rafters beat the Peoria Saguaros, 10-3, on Nov. 15. OF Anthony Webster -- Webster was 1-for-6, but walked twice, stole two bases and scored two runs this week for Grand Canyon. West Oahu CaneFires -- Hawaii Winter Baseball C Emerson Frostad -- Frostad started his fall season on a hot streak, hitting .346 in his first seven games, but has since slumped. The 23-year-old backstop went 2-for-15 and struck out seven times in his last six games. OF John Mayberry -- The CaneFires decided to give their most productive player some rest during the week as he started three of their six games. Mayberry collected a hit in each of his games, including a solo homer during a 7-4 loss to North Shore on Nov. 15. The 22-year-old outfielder is hitting .351 with three homers and 19 RBIs in 21 games. SS Jose Vallejo -- Playing time was limited for the 20-year-old shortstop this week. Vallejo went 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base on Nov. 10, but struck out three times in as many at-bats two days later as West Oahu dropped a 5-2 decision to Waikiki in seven innings. 3B John Whittleman -- The season-long slump continued for Whittleman as he went 2-for-16 in five games this week. His best night at the plate came on Nov. 15 when he doubled, walked and drove in two runs during a 7-4 loss to North Shore Honu. The 19-year-old third baseman is hitting just .192 in 21 games for West Oahu. Dominican Winter League RHP Omar Beltre (Azucareros del Este) -- Did not play this week. SS Enrique Cruz (Leones de Escogido) -- Did not play this week. OF Freddy Guzman (Leones de Escogido) -- Did not play this week. LHP Derek Lee (Aguilas Cibaenas) -- Did not play this week. OF Ruddy Yan (Azucareros del Este) -- Did not play this week. Mexican Pacific League (LMP) RHP Michael Bumstead (Caneros de los Mochis) -- Did not play this week. RHP Nick Masset (Venados de Mazatlan) -- Masset, one of the Rangers' top pitching prospects, appeared in two games this week and saved both. The 24-year-old right-hander retired all six batters he faced, striking out three. Venezuelan Winter League 2B Aarom Baldiris (Navegantes del Magallanes) -- Baldiris saw limited action while coming off the bench for the Navegantes, going hitless in two at-bats and driving in one run. 1B Nate Gold (Leones de Caracas) -- Did not play this week. OF Juan Gonzalez (Aguilas del Zulia) -- Did not play this week. OF Ben Harrison (Caribes de Oriente) -- Harrison collected four hits this week, including a 2-for-4, two-RBI game on Nov. 15, but went a combined 0-for-5 with two strikeouts during a doubleheader against Pastora de los Llanos.
