Daniels optimistic about Padilla
ARLINGTON -- General manager Jon Daniels spent the week in the Florida resort
city of Naples but didn't have much time to sit on the beach or by the
swimming pool.
He barely even had time to get out of the hotel or even look out a window.
"You never know where you are at the moment," Daniels said. "It's like being
in a casino with no windows or clocks. You could be in Florida, New Jersey or
Texas."
His time at the General Managers Meetings was productive in one sense.
Daniels came away from the meetings "cautiously optimistic" that the Rangers
will be able to re-sign pitcher Vicente Padilla.
"We've talked, and I wouldn't say we're close yet," Daniels said on Friday
night after returning from Florida. "But we know what they're looking for and
they know where we stand, and so far there hasn't been a breakdown. Nobody
has run away from the table."
Padilla, who was 15-10 with a 4.50 ERA for the Rangers last season, would be
a strong first step for Daniels in his goal of acquiring two veteran starting
pitchers and a center fielder this winter. The Rangers would also like to add
offense in the middle of the order, but starting pitching and center field
remain the priorities.
There were reports circulating that the Rangers were talking to the Red Sox
about outfielder Manny Ramirez, but club sources shot that down as being
inaccurate. Pitching still comes first.
Re-signing Gary Matthews Jr. is the Rangers' No. 1 option in center field,
and new manager Ron Washington met with him this week in California. Daniels
said that the meeting went well, but that still doesn't guarantee his return.
"We've made Gary an offer, and I get the sense that he'd like to be here,"
Daniels said. "I also get the sense that other teams are in a position to
make a stronger financial offer. He'll have a decision to make."
Gary Matthews Jr
The Rangers have discussed other options, whether it's pursuing free agents
Dave Roberts or Juan Pierre or trading for someone such as Brian Anderson or
Aaron Rowand. The Devil Rays may trade Rocco Baldelli. What's safe to say is
that when it comes to achieving the Rangers' two main goals, Daniels has
aggressively pursued a number of avenues.
"We've had a lot of conversations," he said. "I probably had an equal number
of conversations with agents and clubs. We were a little more focused this
year than last year. Probably because I was new, last year we did a lot of
kicking the tires. This year we had more targeted conversations."
Aaron Rowand(MVP2005好用...XD),跟魔鬼魚換Rocco Baldelli(要用誰呢?)
Beyond Padilla, the Rangers have looked at the free-agent starting pitching
market with strong interest in Barry Zito, Jeff Suppan, Ted Lilly, Miguel
Batista and others, and they've talked to other clubs. The Chicago White Sox,
Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers appear to be the teams willing to trade
pitching.
But, Daniels said, "It's going to be pricey in terms of dollars and talent.
It's obviously going to be a competitive market for everybody."
Barry Zito, Jeff Suppan, Ted Lilly, Miguel Batista
The Rangers also know that any major trade they make will likely have to
include one of their top young pitching prospects, a list that starts with
John Danks, Eric Hurley, Edinson Volquez and Thomas Diamond.
"That's usually the asking price," Daniels said. "We've developed a great
group of young pitchers, and now they're close to Major League-ready. You
develop guys primarily to pitch for you, but part of the process is also
having depth to make a trade.
"I'm not looking to move those guys, but I also realize you have to give up
something to get something in return. But it would still have to be a special
deal."
The Rangers do have some bullpen depth that might lend itself to a trade, and
they added another piece on Friday, when they signed right-hander Franklyn
German to a Minor League contract.
"If we broke camp today, we'd have to tell a couple of guys who deserve to
make the team that they weren't coming with us," Daniels said.
The Rangers were serious players in the pursuit of Japanese right-hander
Daisuke Matsuzaka but are not expected to go after left-hander Kei Igawa.
