Washington confident in '07 Rangers
ARLINGTON -- What's ahead for the Rangers in 2007?
New manager Ron Washington expects it to be a trip to the playoffs.
"I'm very confident that it will happen," Washington said. "I wouldn't want
to go into a season thinking that I didn't have a chance at postseason. If it
doesn't happen, I'll be shocked. It's just that simple."
The Rangers haven't been to the playoffs since 1999. In fact, they've had
just one winning season in the past seven years, so to expect the Rangers to
make the playoffs in 2007 might be a little bit of a stretch, especially
considering who they lost in free agency.
But the most intriguing thing to watch about the Rangers in 2007 is going to
be how the new manager's almost-unlimited optimism and confidence plays out
and how his players react to him.
Washington has made it abundantly clear that he will be a "player's manager."
"I will always be a player's manager because I was a player," Washington
said. "I don't look at the game through rose colored glasses. I know the
difficulty. Everything that they experience, I've experienced as a player.
"I've been on the good side and I've been on the bad side, so when things are
not going right for them, I know how they feel, and I've been through it so I
know what it takes to come out of it. I'll be there to make sure that we pave
the way for them to have a chance to come out of their struggles."
He spent the winter trying to meet one-on-one with as many players as
possible, listening to them about what went wrong in the past and what needs
to get better in the future.
"I've seen these guys from afar for the last, what, 11 years?" said
Washington, who spent 11 years on the Oakland Athletics coaching staff. "I
know they haven't been here that long. Ever since they've arrived, I became a
friend of theirs, just speaking to them, wondering how they're feeling, and
they've impressed me with their attitude about the game.
"Every time I've talked to them they've always mentioned how bad they want to
win, and with that type of attitude, if we can maintain that type of attitude
-- but not only the attitude, go out there and perform up to what we say we
are or what we think, then I think you've crossed that bridge. We have very
talented kids."
General manager Jon Daniels has spent the winter trying to add to that
collection of talent. The Rangers lost outfielders Carlos Lee and Gary
Matthews Jr., pitcher Adam Eaton, catcher Rod Barajas and utilityman Mark
DeRosa to free agency but were able to re-sign pitcher Vicente Padilla.
Frank Catalanotto was signed as an outfielder/designated hitter and Kenny
Lofton and Marlon Byrd were signed to play center field. Eric Gagne signed a
one-year contract to be the new closer.
But Washington said the addition of new personnel will not be the only way
that the Rangers will improve.
"Just believing they can get better will make them better, going out there
doing the proper work, developing proper technique of work and continuing to
have the work ethic that they have," Washington said. "The game of baseball
is about repetition, repeat everything you know how to do and just keep
repeating it."
Offseason report card: The Rangers tried to stay within a $70-75 million
budget while trying to add impact players who can make a difference next
season. Budget constraints kept them from being able to re-sign a number of
key free agents, but they were able to get Padilla to agree to a three-year,
$33.75 million extension. Padilla and Kevin Millwood will once again head the
Rangers rotation while they sort through a long list of candidates to fill
the other spots. Robinson Tejeda is one of them. John Koronka and Kameron Loe
are two others. The Rangers mull the possibility of using Josh Rupe as a
starter. Much would change if they can add Barry Zito.
Millwood
Robinson Tejeda,McCarthy,Kameron Loe/John Koronka
Arrivals: OFs Catalanotto (free agent), Byrd (free agent), Lofton (free
agent); relief pitcher Gagne (free agent).
Departures: OFs Matthews Jr. (free agent) and Lee (free agent); utilitymen
DeRosa (free agent), Eric Young (free agent) and Jerry Hairston Jr. (free
agent); C Rod Barajas (free agent); P Adam Eaton (free agent) and Kip Wells
(free agent).
The road ahead: The Rangers have added a new manager and lost significant
talent. They have a number of young pitchers to choose from in both the
rotation and the bullpen but will need time to sort through it all. Spring
Training will be extremely competitive for pitchers.
