ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have added veteran left-hander Bruce Chen to the
list of candidates for their starting rotation.
The club is in the process of working out an agreement with Chen on a Minor
League contract with a non-roster invitation.
Chen was 0-7 with a 6.93 ERA in 40 games, including 12 starts, for the
Baltimore Orioles in 2006 but the Rangers have positive reports about his
pitching in winter ball. Pitching in Puerto Rico, he had a 0.72 ERA and held
opponents to a .114 batting average during the regular season.
Chen, 29, has pitched in all or parts of nine Major League seasons and had
his best year in 2005 when he was 13-10 with a 3.83 ERA in 34 games,
including 32 starts, for the Orioles.
His career record is 35-37 with a 4.60 ERA in 237 games, including 112
starts, for the Braves, Phillies, Mets, Reds, Astros, Expos, Red Sox and
Orioles. He has allowed 61 home runs in 296 innings over the past two
seasons.
Chen, John Koronka and John Rheinecker would be the primary left-handed
candidates for a spot in the rotation.
