Rangers still must pay A-Rod $9 million
Rodriguez owed assignment bonus, Texas GM Daniels says

The Rangers will save $21.3 million because Alex Rodriguez opted out of his
contract with the New York Yankees, but must still pay $9 million in deferred
payments from the original 10-year, $252 million contract that he signed be-
fore the 2001 season.
Rangers general manager Jon Daniels confirmed the $21.3 million figure al-
though it has been reported that it was $30 million. The difference is the $9
million in deferred money that the Rangers still owed Rodriguez when he was
traded to the Yankees in February 2004.
"Anything that was part of the assignment bonus is considered earned at the
time to the trade," Daniels said.
When the trade was made, the Rangers agreed to pick up a portion of Rod-
riguez's annual salary for the remainder of the contract. The two sides came
to an agreement on how much Rodriguez would have been worth in the 2003-04
free agent market, which they viewed as substantially less than what he re-
ceived in 2000-01.
The Rangers agreed to pay the difference, which the two sides agreed was
roughly worth $7-8 million per season. That's how the Rangers came to save
the $21.3 million when Rodriguez decided to become a free agent again.
As part of the payment schedule agreed to at the time of the trade, Texas
agreed to pay the Yankees $8,116,000 in 2008, $7,101,500 in 2009 and
$6,087,000 in 2010.
The $9 million is deferred money from his salary in 2001-03. The Rangers
were heavy into deferred money at the time. Juan Gonzalez received a sig-
nificant amount of deferred money when he signed with the Rangers before
the 2002 season.
