Gabbard has strong rehab start

FRISCO -- Texas Rangers left-hander Kason Gabbard retired the first nine
batters and made it through four innings without any back problems in his
medical rehab start for Double A Frisco on Saturday night.
Gabbard, who made his lone rehab start since leaving an April 21 game in
Boston with back stiffness, is scheduled to start for the Rangers on Thursday
at Seattle.
"I was happy with my outing," said Gabbard, who threw 65 pitches and gave up
an earned run on one hit with six strikeouts and three walks. "I was able to
get ahead in the count and throw strikes, which puts the pressure on the
hitters. I got a little fatigued my last inning, but that's just baseball."
Gabbard started strong, retiring the side in the first inning on six pitches.
In the second, he benefitted from a backhanded stop by shortstop Elvis Andrus.
"I gave Elvis a hard time because I heard how great his arm was and he
one-hopped the throw to first," Gabbard said.
In the fourth, Gabbard ran into trouble when he gave up a leadoff single and
walked three batters.
"I threw a bullpen three days ago, but it's nothing like facing live
hitters," he said. "I wish I hadn't walked those guys, but it's going to
happen sometimes. But it was great to be out here. I wish these guys the best
of luck."
Gabbard and the other Rough Riders wore pink jerseys for "Paint the Park
Pink" night benefiting the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation. The jerseys
were auctioned after the game.
