[外電] Donnelly inked to Minor League deal
ARLINGTON -- The Rangers are adding pitcher Brendan Donnelly to their Spring
Training roster and the competition for a spot in the bullpen.
Donnelly has agreed to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring
Training. He will make $950,000 if he makes the team and can take his release
if he's not added to the Major League roster between March 27 and April 27.
"Last year he was returning from Tommy John [elbow reconstruction surgery],"
Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "But prior to getting hurt, he was a
veteran with a history of throwing strikes and pitching meaningful innings for
successful teams."
Donnelly was one of the premier setup relievers in baseball from 2002-06 while
with the Angels. He was a member of the Angels bullpen in 2002 and named to the
American League All-Star team in 2003, pitching a scoreless inning and getting
the victory at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.
He was traded to the Red Sox after the 2006 season, but pitched in just 27
games before coming down with a torn ligament in his elbow. He underwent
surgery and was non-tendered by the Red Sox in the offseason. The Indians
signed him as a free agent a year ago and he was activated on Aug. 8. In 15
games, he was 1-0 with an 8.56 ERA.
The Rangers were looking for additional arms in the bullpen after Joaquin
Benoit went down with shoulder surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff last
month. Donnelly, 37, Eddie Guardado and Derrick Turnbow give the Rangers three
former All-Star relievers to compete for spots as setup relievers in the
bullpen.
