Holland to make most of opportunity New York (26-20) at Texas (27-18), 7:05 p.m. CT By Daniel Paulling / MLB.com 05/27/09 2:32 AM ET ARLINGTON -- Derek Holland's second career start could be his last for a while. Vicente Padilla is expected to throw a bullpen session on Friday and could return to the Rangers' rotation on June 2, which is Holland's next scheduled start. Holland joined the rotation when Padilla went on the disabled list on Thursday with an injured shoulder. Padilla, who last pitched on May 16, has been throwing without pain or stiffness on flat ground. He threw long toss of 120 feet on Tuesday. The Rangers originally expected Padilla to make a medical rehabilitation start in the Minors, but they feel he has been throwing enough while he has been sidelined to the point where that probably won't be necessary. "We'll know more after the bullpen, but I don't foresee any problems," Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux said. Holland made seven relief appearances before he moved to the rotation on Friday. He threw 5 2/3 innings against the Astros and allowed three earned runs on 76 pitches in his first career start. Holland threw 58 pitches against the Angels the outing before. "Mike believes that every time you go out there and pitch, you can add 20 pitches," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "That gives him about 100 pitches." Washington said that figure will be Holland's pitch count for Wednesday, but he also said circumstances will dictate how far Holland pitches. Washington hopes 100 pitches will get his pitcher through seven innings. "I was nervous at very, very, very, very first, but I'll be calm when I start," Holland said. "I'll go as far as they want me to go. My dream is a complete game." Holland will start throwing his curveball again on Wednesday. He hasn't used the pitch since college at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Ala. Holland said it hasn't taken him long to regain feel for the pitch, despite the extended period of not using it. Pitching matchup TEX: LHP Derek Holland (1-1, 4.82 ERA) Holland, who was called up in April, opposed the Astros in his first Major League start and threw five scoreless innings before giving up a three-run home run to Lance Berkman in the sixth. The Rangers won the game in extra innings. Holland had a 4.85 ERA in seven relief appearances before he was moved into the rotation. He has a 10.13 ERA in three appearances at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. NYY: RHP A.J. Burnett (2-2, 5.28 ERA) Like many this season, Burnett was reminded in his last start how tough it is to pitch at the new Yankee Stadium. He tied a career high by allowing three home runs to the Phillies on Friday, including one on the first pitch of the game to shortstop Jimmy Rollins. Burnett exited after six innings, having allowed five runs -- all on homers -- and took the loss. Tidbits Washington expects to get Andruw Jones in the lineup Wednesday against Burnett. ... In series finales at home, the Rangers are 6-1 in 2009. ... Double-A Frisco first baseman Justin Smoak, who was the Rangers' No. 1 Draft pick in 2008, is day-to-day with a strained left oblique. ... First baseman Mitch Moreland was promoted from Class A Bakersfield, but he will likely be used in the outfield and at designated hitter. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 122.118.231.148
