[外電] Live chat with GM Jon Daniels
以下是JD在6/16於blog上面的LIVE CHAT裡,個人覺得比較重要的問題回覆~

Q:
whats the status with Ben Sheets, it would be better to sign than to trade
some prospects for a pitcher
Jon Daniels:
According to Ben’s agent, he’s still rehabbing and not yet at the point he’s
ready to talk about signing with a club. We’ll continue to monitor the
situation.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:
With the team in contention the rangers are being linked to trades to
strengthen the team. I dont like the idea of trading any of our top pitching,
we are finally close to growing our own. How do you feel the trade season will
play out?
Jon Daniels:
I agree and you shouldn’t expect to see “our top pitching” traded. But we
are going to look to improve the club and that may involve moving prospects –
it could also involve promoting our own and giving them an opportunity as we’ve
done – or a combination of both.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:
When will we see Neftali Feliz in a Rangers uniform? And will we stay in house
for a bullpen arm?
Jon Daniels:
No specific timetable for Neftali - he'll be here when we feel
he's ready for it. Could be this year, could be next, all depends on his
continued development and our needs... As for the pen, that's hard to say
right now. We've added O'Day and Grilli from outside and we're always
looking. We're happy to give those opportunities to our own guys if they're
ready & deserving.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:
I've heard it mentioned that the best move the Rangers could make this year
would be to trade Millwood for two prospects and plan on going deep into the
playoffs next year, rather than trying to overachieve this year. What does JD
think of that notion--trying to become a powerhouse next year rather than
eeking out a playoff victory or two this year?
Jon Daniels:
I'm not sure I understand that - if we have a real chance to get into the
playoffs, why would we pass on that? Of course you want to have sustained
success (and be a "powerhouse" as you say), but I don't believe we'd pass up a
chance to get into and advance in the post season. That's why we do what we
do. No one is smart enough to look out and definitively say one year is more
likely than the next - things change (injuries, division opponents, etc).
Our goal is to give this club a chance to win
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:
I'm sure that everyone wants to ask a question about trades, etc. but I was
wondering, what you would consider to be the major strength and weakness of
this team as presently constituted?
the division every year, and then make mid-season adjustments as the team &
standings dictate.
Jon Daniels:
One enjoyable part of this season has been that the answer to your question may
be different than it's been here in a long time... The strength of this club
right now, in my opinion, is the consistent level at which the pitching/defense
is performing. I say it like that because they're directly tied together.
We're on the path to changing our identity as an organization from all bats,
no pitching... The weakness right now is the inconsistency of the offense.
Opponents are gameplanning us well and we haven't made the adjustment.
Josh's injury hurts, but the guys here are capable of more. I expect we'll
see improvement - we'll need to in order to get back on a roll.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:
Mr. Daniels, with Derek Holland struggling since being moved to the rotation,
are there thoughts if any of moving him back to the bullpen, or do you let him
take the bumps and buises that come with a youngster...and let it all play out
in the rotation?
Jon Daniels:
Our plan is to let Derek pitch every 5th day right now and give him a chance to
improve. At some point, depending on his progress, the team's needs, and what
other options we have, we'll reevaluate that. When we brought him up, we knew
there would be a learning curve. He's going through what all young pitchers
do, and hopefully he and the team will ultimately be better for it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:
JD, I'm sure you're tired of hearing this, but what are your plans with
Chris Davis? He just seems to be lost at the plate this year. Can you make the
fans happy and send him down to work on his swing?
Jon Daniels:
We challenged Chris before the last road trip - Ron sat him down the last 2
days against Oakland, Rudy worked with him - and he's responded.
Is it perfect yet? No, he needs to continue to improve. But he's been
better since then - using the opposite field more, making more contact.
Young players can be frustrating at times, but we can't commit to playing the
kids and then bail on them when they struggle. The big leagues aren't easy.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:
Speaking of Defense, what are your thoughts about how the young catchers are
doing behind the plate?
Jon Daniels:
Salty's defense has been a highlight for me. He really worked his butt off
and has greatly improved back there - he's as good at blocking balls in the
dirt as anyone, and his throwing has improved as well.
Teagarden was a little more of a known quantity - he isn't getting regular
playing time but he's been relatively consistent when he gets out there.
He's a naturally gifted defender.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:
I recently attended a Frisco game here in San Antonio. I noticed Thomas Diamond
is still with Frisco. He didn't get into the game, so I was wondering what your
thoughts are on Diamond?
Jon Daniels:
TD has had some setbacks the past few years (TJ, ankle). We're trying to get
him regular work in the bullpen right now. He's playing around with a split.
Had a pretty good outing last night, maybe his best in that role.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:
What is the hardest part of the job for a GM?
Jon Daniels:
Balancing your time between the ML club, amateur scouts, pro scouts,
international scouts, player development, the business side, media, fans,
other clubs, the Commissioner's office - and most importantly your family.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:
hey Jon, im curious when will we see julio bourbon in a rangers uniform?
Jon Daniels:
Depends on our needs. He'd be a consideration now if there was an opening.
