PHOENIX -- The Rangers have activated pitcher Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez at
Triple-A Oklahoma. He'll join top pitching prospect Neftali Feliz in the
RedHawks bullpen.
Hernandez, who was signed to a Minor League contract earlier this month, made
his debut for the RedHawks on Wednesday, pitching a scoreless eighth inning
in Oklahoma City's 3-2 victory over Round Rock.
He struck out two and retired one hitter on a fly ball. He needed just 11
pitches. The plan right now is for him to pitch out of the bullpen and he
could be an option for the Rangers at some point in the second half.
Feliz could be a bullpen option, as well. The Rangers decided to move him
into the bullpen on Wednesday. It could lead to a promotion to the Majors at
some point similar to what the team did with Derek Holland.
"We'd like to see if he's an option to help the Major League club in that
role," general manager Jon Daniels said. "He's scheduled to throw an inning
there tomorrow. We still feel he may start for us in the future, but we're
going down that road first."
Feliz is 3-5 with a 3.86 ERA in 13 starts at Oklahoma. He has pitched 60 2/3
innings and allowed 59 hits and 27 walks with 55 strikeouts. Daniels said he
has been looking for ways to strengthen the Rangers bullpen.
The Rangers also activated first baseman Justin Smoak off the disabled list
at Double-A Frisco and he went 2-for-3 in his first game back on Tuesday
night. He is hitting .331 with six home runs and 26 RBIs in 43 games at
Frisco. Smoak was the Rangers No. 1 pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.
