Texas Rangers' Young earns first All-Star start 12:00 AM CDT on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 By ANTHONY ANDRO / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News ST. LOUIS – It was a big day for Rangers third baseman Michael Young. First, he found out he was going to make his first All-Star start, replacing the injured Evan Longoria. Young, who attended the inauguration, also got to meet President Barack Obama. Young, who went 1-for-3 with a single, was understandably upbeat Tuesday. "Going to the All-Star Game in any capacity is always an honor," said Young, who selected as a reserve for the sixth time. "To get an opportunity to start is a blast." He found out Monday night that Longoria was having problems with an infected right ring finger. Manager Joe Maddon gave Young the news Tuesday morning that he was starting. Los Angeles' Chone Figgins was added as a replacement for Longoria and didn't get to the park until two hours before the game started. Maddon chose Young to start and bat seventh because he was voted in by the players. Getting a chance to meet Obama made the night even more special, Young said. The president visited the clubhouse and threw out the first pitch. Derby aftermath: Nelson Cruz didn't win the Home Run Derby, but he got to find out how big the event was. The broadcast was Monday's most-watched television show, and it was apparently a big hit in Cruz's native Dominican Republic. "Everyone was happy in the Dominican," said Cruz, who did not play Tuesday. "I got a bunch of calls, a bunch of texts. The media from the Dominican called me this morning. The whole country paid attention to what was going on. It's been really exciting." One thing he learned from his second-place finish was that it's all about pacing yourself. He ran out of steam in the final against Milwaukee's Prince Fielder. "I know I can hit homers in BP," he said of batting practice. "But it's different in front of a bunch of people." Halladay update: Roy Halladay, who went two innings Tuesday night and allowed three runs, was once again bombarded with questions about a possible trade. The Toronto right-hander hasn't started thinking about possible destinations and reiterated that he's open to remaining with the Blue Jays. "It's hard for me to pick places at this point," he said. "It's hard for me to start naming names. It's too early to go that far." Hamilton better prepared: Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton started for the second consecutive year. That doesn't mean he didn't have butterflies. "You always have a little bit of jitters," said Hamilton, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI grounder. "If you don't have a little bit, something's wrong with you." Briefly: Tuesday's game was the first All-Star Game in St. Louis since 1966. That was the longest drought for a city. Kansas City now has that streak, as it hasn't hosted a game since 1973. -- ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃ Go Texas Rangers ▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅▅ -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 123.205.40.18 ※ 編輯: Terrill 來自: 123.205.40.18 (07/15 20:15)
