KANSAS CITY -- The Rangers are less than a week from the Trade Deadline. It
is a popular topic of conversation in the Rangers clubhouse and on the minds
of many of the players.
"As long as Roy Halladay is out there and Cliff Lee too, then it is
definitely on our minds," outfielder Marlon Byrd said.
The Rangers, with the fourth best record in the American League and the sixth
best record in baseball, are in the playoff hunt, although they still trail
the Angels in the American League West and the Red Sox in the Wild Card
chase. They are openly hoping something will get done before the deadline of
3 p.m. CT on Friday.
"I think I can speak for every player in this clubhouse, we're hoping to get
better any way we possibly can," third baseman Michael Young said. "Whether
that's improving what we have here, or guys just playing better or bringing
guys in from the outside.
"My wish list is do whatever you can to make us the team to beat in the last
two months. But you have to remember I'm a player, I'm not a member of the
front office. My thoughts are completely centered around 2009 and not beyond
that."
Rangers general manager Jon Daniels has made it clear that he is looking at
every possible way to improve the club. The Rangers' No. 1 priority is
starting pitching, but they are also open to upgrading an offense that is
12th in the American League in hitting. They have talked about the bullpen,
but that seems to be low on the priority list.
The Rangers are talking to the Blue Jays about Halladay and they have asked
the Indians about Lee. The Rangers have a deep and attractive farm system but
financial considerations may make any deal tough. The Rangers are unlikely to
take on a significant salary in any deal.
The Rangers know they have a good team that is at least a contender. But they
are hoping for more.
"A bunch of us were talking about it [Saturday] night," Young said. "We feel
like we have a good club. We also look at it as we have the sixth best record
in baseball and the five teams in front of us are all supposedly in some
massive deal. Everybody is trying to improve themselves."
The Rangers hope they are included in that before the Deadline process.
"We're hoping for something," Byrd said. "If not, we'll go with what we have.
It is what it is. Hopefully we'll get something that will help us out.
"But, at the same time, if the Angels go out and get another piece as well as
getting Torii Hunter back, and Vlad Guerrero and Juan Rivera, that will make
them better. Those are likely trades for them. It would be nice if we could
get a No. 1 or No. 2 starter to help our rotation. If not, we'll play the
hand that's dealt us."
Pitching matchup
TEX: RHP Tommy Hunter (2-1, 2.17 ERA)
Hunter pitched six innings and allowed one earned run on Tuesday against the
Red Sox for his second Major League win. It was his third quality start of
the season. He has gone 2-1 with a 1.52 ERA over his last four starts to
lower his ERA to 2.17 from 5.06. Hunter retired 10 consecutive batters from
the second out of the third inning to the second out of the sixth. This is
his debut against the Tigers. In his career at home, Hunter has a 5.01 ERA
with a 2-2 record, but a 2.74 ERA with a 2-1 record at home this season.
DET: RHP Armando Galarraga (5-8, 4.82 ERA)
Galarraga is 2-1 with a 3.03 ERA in his last five starts. Prior to that, he
was 0-7 with a 7.48 ERA after winning three of his first four starts to begin
the season. He is 2-4 with a 5.24 ERA in eight starts on the road this
season. Left-handed hitters are batting .306 off him while right-handed
hitters are batting .242. Opponents are hitting .308 off him with runners in
scoring position. He is 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two starts against the Rangers
since they traded him to Detroit before the 2008 season.
