ARLINGTON -- Ian Kinsler is day-to-day after straining his left hamstring
while running out a ground ball during Tuesday's game against the Tigers.
He wasn't in Wednesday's lineup, but he came to the park saying he could
play. Omar Vizquel is leading off and playing second base in Kinsler's place.
"It's a lot better than I thought it would be," Kinsler said. "It's sore and
tender to touch, but hopefully I'll take a full day today and be ready for
tomorrow."
The Rangers called up Joaquin Arias from Triple-A Oklahoma City to provide
some middle infield depth. Manager Ron Washington has been playing with a
three-man bench for some time and has wanted an extra infielder even before
Kinsler's injury.
"With Kins catching a cramp, we had to get some backup there," Washington
said.
Arias has primarily played shortstop and designated hitter this season and
was hitting .276 in 89 games this season with the RedHawks. He has hit .329
(69-for-210) since the beginning of June.
This is his second stint with the Rangers after not having appeared during
his first callup from May 9-11.
The Rangers optioned pitcher Doug Mathis, who started Tuesday's game, to
Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room on the 25-man roster.
He was 0-1 with a 2.42 ERA over 26 innings this season. Mathis expects to
pitch regularly in the RedHawks' starting rotation, which would allow him to
pitch in long relief for the Rangers.
