The six Minor League players invited to Spring Training are not expected to be
serious candidates to make the team unless opportunities are opened by
injuries to others. This will be the first big league camp for Kiker,
Scheppers, Moreland and Tracy. Smoak and Frostad were in camp last year.
Smoak, the Rangers' No. 1 Draft pick in 2008, batted a combined .290 with 12
home runs and 57 RBIs in 106 games for the Arizona Rookie League Rangers,
Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma City in his second professional season.
He played for the Team USA that won the gold medal at last year's Baseball
World Cup, where he was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player after
matching a U.S. record with 9 home runs in the competition.
Smoak is expected to start the season at Oklahoma City with Chris Davis
returning as the Rangers starting first baseman. Tracy, who hit .279 with 26
home runs and 107 RBIs at Firsco, and Moreland, who hit .311 with 16 home
runs and 85 RBIs at Class A Bakersfield and Frisco, could join Smoak at
Oklahoma City.
Kiker, who was the Rangers No. 1 Draft pick in 2006, was 7-7 with a 3.86 ERA
in 23 starts and two relief appearances at Double-A Frisco. Scheppers was
drafted in the supplemental first round of the 2009 Draft but didn't sign
until Sept. 17. His only professional exposure was in the Arizona Fall
League.
Frostad, 27 and a member of the 2008 Canadian Olympic team, combined to hit
.238 with four home runs and 28 RBIs in 76 games for Double-A Frisco and
Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The Rangers now have 13 non-roster players invited to camp including pitchers
Willie Eyre, Clay Rapada and Geoff Geary, catcher Kevin Richardson and
infielders Matt Brown, Esteban German and Ray Olmedo.
