SURPRISE, Ariz. - A day after manager Ron Washington pronounced the catching
battle was dead even, incumbent Jarrod Saltalamacchia served notice that he
doesn't intend to relinquish his position easily. Saltalamacchia hit a a 2-2
pitch from former Atlanta Braves organization-mate Kyle Davies for a
three-run homer to give the Rangers the lead for good on Thursday.
In his first at-bat of the spring, Saltalmacchia, who hit just .152 with two
strikes in 2009, drove a fastball to the top of the outfield berm in right
center one pitch after fouling a ball off to even the count. Saltalamacchia
later had a single to left field.
Saltalamacchia's three-run homer keyed the Rangers four-run second inning to
overcome a 1-0 deficit. The Rangers also had a three-run homer from backup
infield candidate Matt Brown.

THREE UP
What went right for the Rangers
‧Young Tanner Scheppers, who has not played an official game for a major
league organization, lit up the scoreboard with his fastball. Scheppers
needed seven pitches to work through a 1-2-3 sixth inning. He threw five
fastball, all for strikes and all at 96 mph or better. He didn't even through
his curve, which is considered above average.
‧Get ready for some long games. The young hitters in the Rangers' lineup who
backed up the starters just pounded the ball. Mitch Moreland (3-for-3), Chad
Tracy (1-for-1) and Justin Smoak (1-for-3), all Rangers draftees, were a
combined 5-for-7 with three RBIs.
‧One of the most inefficient starters in the majors over the last decade in
terms of pitches per inning, Harden needed just 29 pitches to work through
two innings against the Royals starting lineup.
THREE DOWN
What went wrong
‧ Harden, considered a power pitcher, only reached 90 mph with his fastball.
Harden said afterward that his velocity will range anywhere from 88-96 mph
this season.
‧ Chris Davis, who got into trouble by chasing too many first pitches last
year, swung and missed at the first pitch in two of his three at-bats. Davis
had the seventh highest percentage of first-pitch swings in the AL last year
(38.7 percent).
‧ After a leadoff single, a stolen base and a ground out to the right side,
the Rangers failed to get Julio Borbon home from third in the first inning.
David Murphy lined out and Vladimir Guerrero popped out.
BATTLE LINES
Looking at the various roster battles in camp
The Rangers could use a right-handed hitting corner infielder for the bench.
It would help if he had a little power in his bat. Matt Brown made it known
quickly that he intends to be a legit candidate for the spot along with Max
Ramirez and perhaps trade target Mike Lowell. Brown had a double and later
hit a three-run homer on a curve ball. Replacing Michael Young for the final
half of the game, however, he also made a throwing error.
GENERATION TEX
Considering prospects performances
Alexi Ogando pitched in a game in the United States for the first time ever
on Thursday after being banned from entering the country for the last five
years. If he was nervous, it didn't show immediately. He averaged 95.8 mph
with his fastball in striking out major league veteran Brayan Pena. Kila
Ka'aihue followed with a single that nearly separated Ogando's skull and
cap.But he recovered to pitch a scoreless inning.
PROJECT O
Examining the Rangers' attempt to improve offensive efficiency
According to the Rangers' new formula for measuring productive plate
appearances, Michael Young was perfect in three at-bats, even though he had a
ground out before a pair of singles. Young's first inning grounder moved
Julio Borbon to third with one out. Young said he'd normally try to "have his
cake and eat it, too" with a 2-and-1 pitch, but at this stage of spring he
wants to make sure every at-bat includes something fundamentally proper.
ON DECK
The Rangers play the second of their three-game opening weekend series
against Kansas City at 1:05 pm MST. RHP Scott Feldman, LHP C.J. Wilson, RHP
Dustin Nippert, RHP Neftali Feliz and LHP Kasey Kiker are scheduled to pitch
for the Rangers. RHP Zack Greinke starts for Kansas City. The game will not
be broadcast locally.
