The Cubs and Rangers will determine whether the Cubs receive cash or a player by July 1. There is no pool of players to chose from, and if they can't agree on a fair name, the Cubs will take cash. Considered more of a defensive player, the Cubs were trying to determine whether Mike Fontenot could back up at shortstop, which would allow them to carry a more offensive player on the bench. Tracy, a left-handed hitter, has played third base this spring, while Millar was starting in left field on Saturday and has played first. Blanco, 25, missed time this spring because of a sprained right knee, injured March 6. In seven Cactus League games, he was batting .667. He can play shortstop or second base. "He's an outstanding defender," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said of Blanco. "No doubt he'll help the Rangers in that capacity. He's out of options and the way we're setting up, [Fontenot] looks like he can handle the shortstop role in a pinch, plus you have [Darwin] Barney, who established himself well in camp plus you have the kid [Starlin Castro] coming." Barney and Castro will both open the season in the Minor League system. In 53 games with the Cubs last season, Blanco batted .252. This winter, he played for Magallenes in Venezuela and batted .291 with two homers, 11 doubles and 27 RBIs. He also stole 14 bases. "I certainly didn't think he'd make it through waivers, so we made a deal," Hendry said. "It's good for the young man. The Rangers were looking for a utility guy. It's a good fit. As we all know, he's an outstanding kid and well above average defender. It's a positive for the Rangers." The Cubs also outrighted pitcher Mike Parisi to Triple-A Iowa. Parisi was a Rule 5 Draft pick and had been outrighted once before by the Cardinals. He cleared waivers, and had the right to elect free agency but chose to stay with the Cubs. Parisi has a good relationship with Mark Riggins, the Cubs' Minor League pitching coordinator. The spring roster now is at 31 players, with Ted Lilly and Angel Guzman to open the season on the disabled list. The 40-man roster is at 37. Besides Tracy and Millar, the other position players in camp include Tyler Colvin, Sam Fuld and catcher Chris Robinson. "We'll toss and turn for a couple more nights and try to figure out which way to go," Hendry said. The Cubs are expected to finalize the 25-man roster by Tuesday or Wednesday -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 122.116.179.20
