[情報] Matt Treanor likely headed back to club
ARLINGTON, Texas -- It appears the Texas Rangers are close to having their
catching situation solidified for the 2011 season.
The club signed Yorvit Torrealba to a two-year deal three days ago to become
the starting catcher. On Friday, general manager Jon Daniels said he expects
Matt Treanor to be with the club next season.
"There's a pretty good chance Matt will be back," Daniels said. "He wants to
be back and we want him back. I don't know that it will happen in the next
day or so, but I'm pretty confident Matt will be back in a Rangers uniform."
Treanor would compete with Taylor Teagarden for the backup spot.
Treanor quickly won over teammates last season when the club's catcher
position broke down in the first week of the season. Starter Jarrod
Saltalamacchia was injured and Teagarden never found his groove at the plate.
Treanor, acquired in a trade from the Milwaukee Brewers just prior to
training camp, was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City and confidently took
over the pitching staff, and he made key contributions at the plate during
the regular season and playoffs.
After the Rangers acquired veteran catcher Bengie Molina, Treanor mostly
served in a backup role and was consistently the battery mate for C.J.
Wilson. Molina, who contemplated retirement, is a free agent and will not be
back with the Rangers.
