Rangers visit Lee, prepare to make offer

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels and team president Nolan Ryan visited
free-agent left-hander Cliff Lee at his Arkansas home today.

Daniels, in an interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, tried to downplay
the importance of the trip. "We continued the dialogue," Daniels said.

process, and they're going to make the best decision for him and his family."

Lee's agent, Darek Braunecker, told the Star-Telegram that he and his client
appreciated the gesture.

A source told the New York Post that the Rangers are willing to offer Lee a
five-year deal, and that they believe the Yankees are willing to pay Lee up
to $23 million per season. In addition, the Rangers believe the Yankees
already have made a five- or six-year offer to Lee.

"They want to know soon on Lee," the source told the New York Post, noting

Braunecker wouldn't comment specifically about whether Lee has received any
offers yet. "We are starting to move stuff along," he told the New York Post.

The Rangers will continue to try to sell the proximity to Lee's home and the
lack of a state sales tax in Texas as incentives for Lee, but the New York
Post reports most in baseball believe the Yankees ultimately will offer the
most money.

2009 AL Cy Young award winner in exchange for a "blockbuster return,"
according to The Kansas City Star.
