Winter Meetings: More lobby chatter
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- A few random things from talking with folks in the
large lobby at the Dolphin Hotel here at DisneyWorld:
* At this point, the Rangers have little interest in Brandon Webb, who is a
health risk. That's not to say that could change based on their history of
signing players with that low risk-high reward ability. But as of now, the
free-agent pitcher who has thrown four innings the past two seasons isn't
high on their list.

* There has been some interest in first baseman Chris Davis from a few clubs,
but it's unclear if that will turn into anything.

* The Royals seem like a logical fit for former Ranger Jeff Francoeur. Texas
likes him, but the outfielder wants to go to a place where he can get some
more playing time. He'd have to platoon, like he did down the stretch, in
Texas, so that doesn't seem like a fit. It's too bad because few players fit
in better in the Rangers' clubhouse than Francoeur.

* Not hearing much in regards to Rangers interest in Carl Pavano. But not
much can happen on that front until Cliff Lee decides where he's going.

* As we blogged earlier, Lee's agent, Darek Braunecker, is setting up
meetings, which will include one with the Rangers. It's unclear when that
might happen, but it will be soon.

* The chatter seems to indicate Paul Konerko will end up back with the White
Sox. That still leaves Vladimir Guerrero on the market, not to mention some
lower-level guys that could be obatined at a bargain before spring training
(that's how the Rangers got Guerrero, who fell to them after other guys were
signed). Guerrero is seeking a multi-year deal and so far he has no takers.
We'll discuss some of the other DH possibilities in the next few days.
