Arbitration decision looms for Vlad, Rangers
Lee, Francisco, Molina also await possible offers Tuesday

ARLINGTON -- The best indication yet if free agent designated hitter Vladimir
Guerrero will play for the Rangers in 2011 will likely come down Tuesday.

That's when the Rangers, who are opposed to doing a multi-year contract with
Guerrero, must decide if they are going to offer him arbitration. Guerrero,
who hit .300 with 29 home runs and 115 RBIs this past season, is a Type A
free agent, and the Rangers must offer him arbitration if they want to get
two Draft picks as compensation if he signs for another team.

Two questions loom:
Will the Rangers offer arbitration and, if they do, will Guerrero accept?
If the Rangers offer arbitration, they run the risk of Guerrero accepting it.
If he does, he becomes a signed player for 2011 and would likely receive
through the arbitration process a significant increase over his 2010 salary
of $6.5 million.

If Guerrero accepts, he will be committing himself to playing in 2011 on a
one-year contract. Guerrero, who turns 36 in February, recently told
reporters in the Dominican Republic that he wants a two- to three-year
contract. The Rangers, concerned about where their payroll is headed in the
next few years, are reluctant to do a multi-year deal with Guerrero. They
would rather go year-to-year.

"I want a two- or three-year contract," Guerrero told the Dominican Republic
newspaper Listin Diaro last week. "But I'm not going to say the amount of
money I want -- just that I want a contract in line with the type of season I
had."
Guerrero, who hit .295 with 15 home runs and 50 RBIs over 100 games in an
injury-marred 2009 season for the Angels, played in just 16 games in the
outfield for the Rangers this past season while spending the rest of the time
at designated hitter. That is likely to be his permanent occupation for the
remainder of his career as he tries to achieve his stated goal of finishing
with 500 home runs. He has 436.

That would limit his options to the American League, but there are several
clubs who could use the kind of offensive numbers he put up in 2010. The
Mariners, Athletics, Orioles, White Sox, Royals, Twins and Tigers are all in
the market for significant offensive upgrades. There have been reports that
Guerrero is attracting interest from several clubs.

The Rangers also face similar decisions with three other Type A free agents:

With Lee, there is no doubt. The Rangers will offer him arbitration in order
to get Draft-pick compensation. Lee is the most-coveted free agent on the
market who could command $100-$120 million over five years from somebody. The
Yankees are hot in pursuit although the Rangers continue to stay in engaged
with Lee's agent Darek Braunecker.

The Rangers are unlikely to offer arbitration to Molina, who is 36 and hit
.249 with five home runs and 36 RBIs in 118 games while splitting the season
with Texas and San Francisco. The Rangers are still looking for catching help
but are aggressively pursuing free-agent catcher Victor Martinez. The other
top free-agent catchers include Rod Barajas, Gerald Laird, Miguel Olivo, A.J.
Pierzynski and Yorvit Torrealba.

Francisco, 31, was 6-4 with a 3.76 ERA in 56 games for the Rangers after
being moved from closer to setup reliever early in the season. He also missed
all of September and the playoffs with a strained muscle in his right rib
cage. He made $3.25 million in 2010, and the Rangers are likely unable to
afford a significant raise through arbitration if they hope to address other
needs.

The Rangers, when it comes to their payroll, could be dealing with
hyper-inflation this offseason. Beyond the four Type A free agents, there are
seven players eligible for pre-free agency arbitration: outfielders Josh
Hamilton, Nelson Cruz and David Murphy, and pitchers C.J. Wilson, Darren
O'Day, Dustin Nippert and Mark Lowe.

The Rangers currently have five players under contract for 2011 with Michael
Young ($16 million), Ian Kinsler ($6 million), Scott Feldman ($4.4 million),
Colby Lewis ($3.25 million) and Darren Oliver ($3.25 million). That's
approximately $33 million for five players.

The unpredictable arbitration process could raise the payroll another $20-$30
million. Counting pre-arbitration salaries at other positions, the Rangers'
payroll could be at the 2010 level of $65-$70 million before they start
addressing their stated needs of a starting pitcher, designated hitter,
catcher and right-handed reliever.

If the Rangers were able to bring Lee back at a $20-plus million annual
salary, the Rangers would be close to $90 million without having addressed
catcher or designated hitter. A trifecta of signing Lee, Guerrero and
Martinez could push the Rangers well over $110 million, and doing long-term
deals with all three could handcuff the club later when the
arbitration-eligible players start approaching free agency.

If Lee signs elsewhere -- most likely the Yankees -- it would leave a hole in
the Rangers' rotation but give them more flexibility to address other needs
while spending considerably less money on a starting pitcher.
The Rangers have new ownership, but they still have significant financial
decisions to make this winter and part of that will be Tuesday when it comes
to offering arbitration to their Type A free agents.
