Five candidates interview for Texas Rangers hitting coach position
The process for finding a new hitting coach advanced significantly Monday as
the Texas Rangers formally interviewed five candidates in Arlington.
Manager Ron Washington said there is no timetable to select a replacement for
Clint Hurdle, and it's unlikely that additional interviews will be conducted.
Thad Bosley was the last of the candidates to meet with members of the front
office and coaching staff. Hurdle was hired as Pittsburgh's manager last week
after one year with the Rangers.
Triple A hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh, roving hitting instructor Luis Ortiz,
special assignment coach Johnny Narron and another former Oakland hitting
coach, Ty Van Burkleo, also interviewed.
"Each guy was impressive," manager Ron Washington said.
Bosley, considered the runner-up to Hurdle last off-season as the Rangers
replaced Rudy Jaramillo, could be the front-runner.
He was the Oakland hitting coach from 2000 to 2003, when he built a
relationship with Washington. Bosley was hired in June as the coach at
Southwestern College in Phoenix.
Bosley and Van Burkleo are the only candidates who have served as a
big-league hitting coach.
