Vlad wins Edgar Martinez Award
Former MVP is this year's outstanding designated hitter
Veteran slugger Vladimir Guerrero added to his impressive legacy and trophy
collection on Wednesday, when he was named the 2010 recipient of the Edgar
Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award. Guerrero, a nine-time All-Star
and a former American League Most Valuable Player, became just the second
Texas Ranger to win the ODH Award, which was re-named in honor of Martinez in
2004.
Guerrero, who spent most of his career in right field before transitioning to
DH last season, had a huge year after signing a free-agent contract with
Texas. Guerrero batted .306 with 25 home runs and 106 RBIs out of the
designated hitter slot, capably supporting Most Valuable Player Josh
Hamilton. Guerrero also won his eighth Silver Slugger Award for his standout
season, his first in the DH category.
"It was awesome to watch Vladimir play the game and hit this year," Hamilton
said. "It was something I have never seen before. You can't teach it. He
always has a smile on his face and thinks he can hit anything."

And in the race for the award named after Martinez -- a five-time
award-winner in his own right -- Guerrero didn't have much competition.
Guerrero took 61 of the 84 first-place votes to easily outpace Boston's David
Ortiz, who had won the award five straight times from 2003-07. Only two other
players -- Minnesota's Jim Thome and Baltimore's Luke Scott -- received even
a single vote in the balloting.

Guerrero, who's a free agent again, became the first Ranger to win the
Outstanding Designated Hitter trophy since Rafael Palmeiro in 1999. Guerrero
was also named as the AL Comeback Player of the Year by The Sporting News in
recognition of his season. The 35-year-old has a .320 career average with
2,427 hits and 436 homers, statistics that may eventually make his case for
induction to the Hall of Fame.
The Outstanding Designated Hitter Award has been distributed annually since
1973, and Commissioner Bud Selig decided to rename it after Martinez in 2004
in recognition of his outstanding career. Martinez, who played 18 seasons for
Seattle, won the ODH five times and batted .312 with 309 career home runs and
1,261 RBIs. Martinez, in fact, played less than 600 games in the field during
his lengthy career.
