[討論] A quick look at 10 noteworthy arbitration decisions
The deadline for teams to offer arbitration to their ranked players
officially passed late Tuesday night.
Players must now decide whether they'll accept the arbitration offer for a
one-year deal, work out a different deal with last year's team or hit the
free-agent market in search of multi-year riches.
While we wait to see if teams will get any draft picks back should a player
sign elsewhere — strong possibilities in the cases of Type A free agents
like Cliff Lee(notes), Jayson Werth(notes), Carl Crawford(notes), Rafael
Soriano(notes) and Paul Konerko(notes) — let's take a look at 10 arbitration
decisions that generated some talk on Tuesday.
1. The Milwaukee Brewers offer Trevor Hoffman(notes): Offering a 43-year-old
closer with possible retirement plans a chance to hit the table for a
guaranteed salary close to the $7.5 million he made in 2010? Huh? Eh, it's
not as crazy as it sounds. Hoffman and the Crew have a gentlemen's agreement
that he'll turn down the arbitration offer. And if Hoffman finds a closer's
job on the West Coast, the Brewers will get an extra pick in the 2011 draft.
Consider it Hoffman's parting gift after Milwaukee threw him a nice party for
career save No. 600.
2. The New York Yankees offer Javier Vazquez(notes): Same deal as Hoffman.
The 2010 disappointment wants a chance to prove himself every fifth day in
2011 and he won't get that in the Bronx. Signs have him landing with the
Florida Marlins and the Yankees would get a draft pick between the first and
second rounds if he does. Consider it Vazquez's "sorry I couldn't even make
your playoff roster" parting gift.
3. The New York Yankees decline Derek Jeter(notes): Oh, you heard something
about the Yankees decision to not give Jeets the option of making about $25
million for 2011? (Not that he would have taken them up on it.) The Yankees
also declined arbitration on Lance Berkman(notes), Andy Pettitte(notes),
Mariano Rivera(notes) and Kerry Wood(notes).
4. The San Francisco Giants offer Juan Uribe(notes): The defending world
champions extended an offer to their only ranked free agent and it's a smart
move. If Uribe goes elsewhere, they'll get a draft pick. If he opts for
arbitration, he won't get that big of a raise from the $3.25 million in 2010
and they'll retain a power-hitting infielder with positional flexibility. One
of the biggest no-brainer offers out there.
5. The Chicago White Sox decline A.J. Pierzynski(notes): The Dennis the
Menace catcher wants to remain on the South Side. So much so that the White
Sox were likely afraid he'd take their arbitration offer and make somewhere
near the $6.25 million he was paid in 2010. If A.J. walks and Konerko goes
elsewhere, every position player from the 2005 title team will be gone.
6. The Chicago White Sox decline Manny Ramirez(notes): What? The Pale Hose
didn't want to give Man-Ram a chance to make $16 million or more next season?
Shocking!
7. The Texas Rangers offer Frank Francisco(notes): In the wake of Joaquin
Benoit's(notes) three-year, $16.25 million deal with the Detroit Tigers,
you'd figure that the Rangers' former closer would be hanging out his shingle
the other day. But he's actually expected to accept Texas' offer and make
around $4 million for one season of work. That injury that kept him out of
the Rangers' postseason run probably wouldn't help him out on the market.
8. The Texas Rangers decline Vladimir Guerrero(notes): GM Jon Daniels says he
still wants Vlad back next season. But on his terms, not an arbitrator's.
(Guerrero would have brought two draft picks as a Type A free agent, but it
seems obvious Daniels sees that aging 1B/DH market as oversaturated as
everyone else does. No one would be giving up two draft picks to sign
Guerrero to a multi-year deal.)
9. The Washington Nationals offer Adam Dunn(notes): Hey, weren't these two
sides supposed to have already agreed to a deal by now?
10. The Minnesota Twins offer Carl Pavano(notes): Mr. Mustache is the gift
that keeps on giving in the Twin Cities in 2010. First he wins 17 games for a
division title team, now the Type A free agent will deliver two draft picks
should he go looking for a multi-year deal elsewhere. However, he did accept
Minnesota's offer of arbitration in 2009.
