[討論] Winter Meetings inconclusive for Rangers
Winter Meetings inconclusive for Rangers
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Winter Meetings came to an end on Thursday with
the Rangers having little idea if they will be able to re-sign free agent
pitcher Cliff Lee.
There were points during the Rangers' four-day stay at the Walt Disney World
Swan and Dolphin Report when they felt they had a good chance of signing Lee.
There were other times when they weren't quite as optimistic.
The Rangers have always known there is a good chance that Lee could end up in
New York and they have been weighing other options, which is why they have
been talking to the Royals about pitcher Zack Greinke. That is getting them
nowhere, either.
So, on Thursday morning, as the Rule 5 Draft concluded and brought the Winter
Meetings to a close, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels spoke about moving
either closer Neftali Feliz or setup reliever Alexi Ogando into the rotation.
"We're looking at it as an alternative," Daniels said. "We've talked about
moving Feliz and Ogando and seeing what they can do as starters. At some
point, we may commit to it. Is it perfect? No. Are they finished products?
No. They're in the development process, but at some point, we may need to see
if it's something they can do.
"We're not making the decision today. Feliz is our closer now. He'll get
stretched out in Spring Training, but we'll see what else happens this
winter."
Right now, Feliz is the closer with Ogando, Frank Francisco, Mark Lowe,
Darren O'Day and Japanese free agent Yoshinori Tateyama as right-handed setup
relievers. Francisco was the Rangers' closer in 2009, saving 25 games, before
losing the job to Feliz early this past season.
The Rangers could use the free-agent market to reinforce their bullpen and
allow them to move either Feliz or Ogando to the rotation. The Rangers are
unlikely to get involved with closer Rafael Soriano, a free agent who had 45
saves for the Rays this past season. The Rangers are generally opposed to
handing out big contract to relievers.
"You don't have to build up a bullpen by giving big contracts to relievers,"
Daniels said.
Left-hander Brian Fuentes, who had 24 saves for the Angels and Twins, and
right-hander Bobby Jenks, who notched 27 saves before being non-tendered by
the White Sox, are both free agents and have closer experience. So does Kerry
Wood, who is from the Dallas-Fort Worth area and is receiving interest from
the Rangers. He had 34 saves for the Cubs in 2008, but also flourished as a
setup reliever for the Yankees down the stretch.
Jon Rauch had 21 saves for the Twins before they acquired Matt Capps at the
Trade Deadline. Other quality setup relievers still available include
right-handers Grant Balfour, Jesse Crain, Guillermo Mota and Matt Guerrier
and left-handers Pedro Feliciano and Scott Downs.
"We're still in the middle of December," Daniels said. "There are a lot of
good players out there."
The Rangers also looked at upgrading their offense, rather than their
pitching, but that idea doesn't seem to be taking hold. The Rangers met with
Carl Crawford's agent on Wednesday, but didn't appear to have their hearts
into it. Crawford ended up agreeing to a seven-year, $142 million deal with
the Red Sox.
"We like the player, but we were not expecting to sign him," Daniels said.
The Rangers still need a designated hitter, and all signs indicate that their
attention is directed toward re-signing Vladimir Guerrero. Discussions
continue and the Rangers still feel confident they can get that done, but
it's not there yet.
"You either have a deal, or not," Daniels said. "There are not any gray
areas. You never know if one phone call or one meeting can bring it all
together."
Deals done: The Rangers made just one trade, acquiring right-handed pitcher
Mason Tobin from the Cubs. He was selected from the Angels organization in
Thursday's Rule 5 Draft.
Rule 5 activity: Tobin, 23, hasn't pitched since April 15, 2009, when he was
with Class A Rancho Cucamonga in the California League. Sidelined since then
with elbow problems, he underwent Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery.
But he is a power-throwing right-hander who could compete for a spot in the
Rangers' bullpen.
Goals accomplished: None. The Rangers still need starting pitching and a
designated hitter. They do seem to be making progress toward re-signing
Guerrero as their DH, but there is no agreement yet.
Unfinished business: Rangers CEO Chuck Greenberg and assistant general
manager Thad Levine were in Arkansas on Thursday to meet with Lee and Darek
Braunecker. The Rangers are willing to go six years on a deal with Lee, but
they could drop out if reports are accurate that the Yankees have offered
seven years.
GM's Bottom Line: "Would we have liked to have closed a deal and get some
momentum going for the offseason? Yes," said Daniels. "But there are still
plenty of good players out there. We're not trying to win the Winter
Meetings. That's not the goal."
