The Void I found myself wondering after yesterday's lively discussion whether or not, in his 108.2 innings of work as a Texas Ranger, Cliffly markedly improved the Rangers pitching staff's overall numbers? Did he, in other words, make the staff better in any statistically measurable way? The Rangers staff ranked fourth in the AL in ERA with a 3.93. Ranger Cliff's was 3.98. The Rangers staff ranked third in the AL in BAA with a .246. Ranger Cliff's was .248. The Rangers staff ranked second in the AL in SLG-against with a .390. Ranger Cliff's was .393. The Rangers staff ranked fifth in the AL in OPS-against with a .709. Ranger Cliff's was .662. And you can figure out from those last two sets of numbers that the difference was solely based on the fact that Cliff didn't walk anybody (8.00 K/9) and the rest of the staff...umm..did (2.14 K/BB, which, by the way, was still 6th in the AL). The Rangers pitching staff was 4th in the AL in WAR and 5th in WPA. As you can see from the other numbers, Cliffly had little to do with either. Statistically speaking, he neither helped nor hurt this staff's global stats in most categories. He was, with the exception of a ridiculously low walk rate, almost exactly a staff-average pitcher in many critical statistical categories. Are there other things Lee brought to the table that will be missed? Of course there are and I don't mean to minimize the intangibles such as helping this ballclub feel more confident about their chances against anybody, but I suspect they developed a bit of confidence in themselves beyond what Lee gave them over the course of the post-season. It's also interesting to note that the Rangers staff's BABIP last year was dead on the baseline of .290, so their solid numbers certainly weren't the result of extraordinary luck. Now, subtract Rich Harden's 92 innings that hurt the global numbers for this staff and they improve a bit in every category. Put differently, Harden dragged them down far more than Lee propped them up. Lee and Harden combined to give the Rangers exactly 200 innings last year. Their combined ERA over those 200 innings was 4.73. How in the hell will the Rangers replace that? 資料來源: http://www.bbtia.com/home/2010/12/16/the-void.html -- 2010 Texas Rangers Postseason Franchise Roster (SP)Cliff Lee (C)Benjie Molina (1B)Mitch Moreland (2B)Ian Kinsler (SS)Elvis Andrus (3B)Michael Young (LF)David Murphy (CF)Josh Hamilton (RF)Nelson Cruz (DH)Vladimir Guerrero (SP)C.J.
