[討論] Brandon Webb worth the risk for Rangers
Brandon Webb worth the risk for Rangers
For those of you who regularly read this blog, you know I like the idea of
taking a chance on Brandon Webb (a source confirmed to ESPNDallas.com on
Sunday that an agreement had been reached on a one-year deal pending a
physical). We discussed it on this blog last week, in fact.
What I like is that this front office, despite taking a chance on Rich Harden
and having that backfire on them in 2010, wasn't afraid to take a risk again
this offseason on a starter hoping to make a comeback. No, Webb isn't Cliff
Lee or Zack Greinke, but he's got a chance to help this rotation if he's
healthy.
Signing a pitcher like Webb to a one-year deal for a guaranteed base and
incentives is still a risk in that you're devoting part of your payroll to a
guy that has pitched four innings in the majors the last two seasons. But at
a one-year deal (not unlike Harden, who had a buyout on an option year), it's
just a one-season risk. If it works out, great. If it doesn't, you move on.
With a guy like Webb, you know if he's healthy, he's got Cy Young stuff. He
won the award in 2006 and was an All-Star in 2007 and 2008 for Arizona. The
last time he pitched a full season he won 22 games. That's tough to ignore,
isn't it? He had surgery to clean up his shoulder in August 2009 and has
pitched in the instructional league this fall and is expected to be fully
healthy for spring training. He's a sinker ball pitcher that doesn't give up
a lot of homers and induces ground balls (when he's on his game). That's
ideal in every park, certainly, but especially in Rangers Ballpark in
Arlington, known as a hitter-friendly venue thanks to the jet stream.
Webb will turn 32 in May, so he's got some years left. He's motivated to show
he can still pitch in the majors and he's hoping to perform well in 2011 to
create a more lucrative market for this time next year. He's got little
choice after pitching just four innings combined in 2009 and 2010.
The Rangers know Webb's medical situation better than most teams because
Keith Meister, the team physician, did Webb's surgery in 2009. So the Rangers
have added a pitcher who has top-flight stuff if he can return to form
following the injury. That's a good deal. And it's one worth taking a risk
on.
Do you like this signing?
