Martin Perez struggled through a rocky 2010 season. On Saturday, he provided
additional proof that he's put it behind him.
The Rangers' top prospect allowed one run and scattered six hits over five
innings to win his Triple-A debut as the Round Rock Express held on for a 3-2
victory over the Memphis Redbirds.
MLB.com's No. 16 overall prospect got off to a quick start, retiring the side
in order in each of the first two innings.
"I was throwing my fastball in and away for strikes," said Perez, who signed
with Texas as a non-drafted free agent in July 2007. "I had command of my
three pitches and I felt good today."
The 20-year-old left-hander pitched out of trouble in the third, getting Pete
Kozma to line into a double play after Bryan Anderson hit a leadoff single. A
two-out error by third baseman Chris Davis kept the inning alive and James
Rapoport singled to put runners at the corners, but Perez struck out Tyler
Greene.
"I thought I was allowing too many balls and I told myself to throw strikes,"
he said.
The native of Venezuela ended up throwing 48 of 76 pitches for strikes,
fanning four without issuing a walk.

A year ago, Perez struggled in the Texas League, going 5-8 with a 5.96 ERA 24
games (23 starts). Returning to Double-A Frisco this spring, he went 4-2 with
a 3.16 ERA in 17 outings, including a five-inning perfect game on April 19.
He pitched a scoreless inning in the Texas League All-Star Game and, on
Sunday, appeared in the All-Star Futures Game.
Perez learned of his promotion from RoughRiders pitching coach Jeff Andrews
following a bullpen session on Thursday. He said he was excited but not
nervous for his Pacific Coast League debut.
"It's the last stop in the Minor Leagues and I'm pretty excited because I
threw my first game here and I got a win," he added.
Having turned 20 in April, Perez is the youngest player in the PCL. But he's
already thinking about what he has to do to reach the next level.
"I think throwing my fastballs for a strike and my secondary pitches for
strikes," he said. "I think [the promotion's] good for me because I can learn
a lot. And if I throw the ball over the plate and for strikes, I will be
ready for the big leagues."
Mark Hamburger gave up a run on two hits over two innings, but Darren O'Day
and Pedro Strop each worked a hitless frame to preserve the win. Strop
pitched around a walk in the ninth for his seventh save.
Leonys Martin went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Joey Butler hit a solo homer and
scored twice for the Express, who have won three of the last four games.
