Hernandez emerged with a severe contusion but no fracture, which came as a relief to Young. "I don't like to see people get hurt," said Young, who made an in-game call to the Seattle clubhouse to check on Hernandez. "I was hoping it wasn't anything serious. I've got a lot of respect for Felix. He competes." Young was, by choice, the only full-time starter in the lineup, as Washington gave others a day off after a night of division-clinching revelry. Young realized in the morning that Washington did not have enough reserve infielders to cover every position and volunteered via text message to play. "Class act," Washington said. "My response was, 'Mike, you are the man. You see and sense it all.'" Young played third and had two hits to raise his average to .338.
