Josh Hamilton places spring training deadline on contract extension talk By Evan Grant / Blogger egrant@dallasnews.com | Bio 2:40 PM on Sat., Jan. 14, 2012 ARLINGTON - Rangers OF Josh Hamilton said Saturday his deadline for executing a contract extension that would keep him from exploring free agency is the start of spring training. Prior to his appearance at Rangers Fan Fest, Hamilton said he wants to focus on the 2012 season. And, for him, the season starts when he reports to spring training. In the second year of a two-year deal, Hamilton can become a free agent after the coming season. Told the Rangers have historically gotten more serious with core players about extensions during spring training, Hamilton smiled. "Let's change that," he said. Hamilton, who is scheduled to make $13.75 million this season, said the Rangers Friday meeting with free agent Prince Fielder do not give him any concerns about his long-term future. Both Fielder and Hamilton are are left-handed hitters. It's unlikely the team could afford to keep both players past 2012. "There's nothing to worry about," Hamilton said. It would really be amazing." Hamilton started swinging a bat off a tee last week following his recovery from early-November sports hernia surgery.
