Rangers release Brad Hawpe http://tinyurl.com/7q2dcex The Rangers released DH-1B Brad Hawpe immediately after Thursday's 6-2 exhibition loss to San Francisco. Hawpe, who is trying to come back from Tommy John surgery, couldn't yet play the outfield and didn't have an impressive enough spring to win a job as a pinch hitter. The team needs a right-handed hitting outfielder. Hawpe is currently essentially a left-handed hitting DH. Hawpe, a Fort Worth native, hit .231 with a homer and two RBIs in 26 at-bats. The Rangers had to inform Hawpe of his roster situation by 11 a.m. CDT Friday morning or pay him a $100,000 retention bonus. "He was injured and we tried to get him going and we couldn't," manager Ron Washington said. "He wasn't going to make the team." If Hawpe doesn't find another major league job, he could still rejoin the Rangers and play at Triple-A Round Rock.
