Grant: Rangers have long list of needs heading into off-season
Always the optimist, Rangers manager Ron Washington found something positive
to extract from his team’s earlier-than-expected finish.
While other contenders are still playing, the Rangers, Washington and general
manager Jon Daniels noted this week, they have an extra month to start
preparing for 2014.
Good thing, too. The Rangers’ list of needs is long.
They may need to make a change at first base. They need to untangle the web
of middle infielders. They need an outfielder, a DH and a catcher, too. And
they will have less payroll flexibility to work with than in the last couple
of years. Fortunately, the pitching needs are relatively small, perhaps for
the first time ever.
The front office: Throw some daggers!
They must act more quickly and decisively and be prepared to take more risk
than makes them comfortable.
While the Rangers were surveying the market early last off-season, two of
their top targets, outfielder Torii Hunter and catcher Russell Martin, went
off the boards quickly. Detroit may have overpaid Hunter and Pittsburgh may
have given Martin more security than the Rangers were willing to give, but
they ended up with solid players. Both are still alive in the postseason. So
is pitcher Zack Greinke, who got more from the Dodgers than the Rangers were
willing to offer.
“Those deals worked out well for those clubs,” Rangers GM Jon Daniels said.
“They got deals we weren’t willing to do at the time. I don’t look and
think we should have moved quicker. We were ready; they got better deals. I
don’t have any issue with that decision.
“The downside of not playing now is obvious: you’re not playing,” Daniels
added. “The upside is there is additional time to prepare. We’re going to
make sure we utilize that.”
The Rangers must make better use of that time. They have fewer dollars to
spend this winter. The market appears to be thinner. And, if last winter was
any indication, the majority of signings happen in a more compressed amount
of time.
As if this needed saying: making sure inter-office politics don’t play a
role is absolutely essential.
The middle infield: Make a decision already
The Rangers need to either find a spot for Jurickson Profar to play every day
or trade him.
Nothing else makes sense.
They simply can’t repeat the situation that played out this season. Profar
received close to a year’s worth of service time (which is valuable), but
about a half season of playing time (which may have inhibited his growth).
“It was a challenging role for a young player,” Daniels said. “I thought
[Ron Washington] did a good job of keeping him engaged and utilizing him as
he felt he needed to. The question we have to answer is offensively had he
been playing more would he have produced more and would we feel differently?
“I think generally speaking we would have felt that way. He needs to get
better in certain areas, and I believe he will. As for a role, it’s way
early to assess that.”
To find regular playing time, it means either moving second baseman Ian
Kinsler to a new position or to a new team. Kinsler balked at the former last
year. As for the latter: With $62 million tied up in him for the next four
seasons, the Rangers would have to eat a significant amount of contract or
sell for a low, low return.
The issue with Kinsler is more cloudy than ever. As a second baseman, he’s
always had above-average value, but that has dipped in the last two seasons.
Much of that value was based on his power and speed for his position, but in
2013, he experienced drops in both areas.
The Rangers have holes at first and left field. Moving Kinsler to a new
position — and taking a more forceful approach — could be considered. If he
is moved to a run-producing spot, such as first base or left field, his value
might tumble further.
Kinsler
First base: Rangers will need more production
Mitch Moreland has had three full seasons to prove he’s as good as he looked
in the second half of 2010.
While he continues to improve as a fielder, he has gone backward offensively.
That’s not a good trend for a position that is offensive in nature and
should be alarming for a team that struggled on offense.
“We need to improve our offense,” GM Jon Daniels said when asked if first
base needed to be addressed. “That’s probably a better way to look at it
across the board as a team and not spot by spot. Relative to the rest of the
club, Mitch was one of the more productive guys, but that’s not a great
qualifier because we weren’t as productive as we needed to be.
“We do need more run production out of first base than we had,” Daniels
added. “We certainly don’t want to give up on him, but it’s an area we’d
like to see improvement.”
Moreland
If the Rangers opt to go in a different direction, first base may be one of
the more intriguing spots on the free-agent market, even for a team needing
that first baseman to hit from the left side. Cuban defector Jose Dariel
Abreu is already drawing lots of interest at workouts in the Dominican
Republic but may command a contract in excess of $10 million per year.
If he’s not an option for a team that will have to watch its expenditures
more closely, another Cuban first baseman might be. Kendrys Morales, a
switch-hitter is also free. Morales might be slightly more affordable than
Abreu and is more athletic.
Justin Morneau and James Loney are also options, though Morneau may be on the
decline, and Loney has never hit 20 homers in a season. One other name:
Toronto’s Adam Lind, a career .327 hitter in Arlington with 12 homers in 119
at-bats. Toronto holds a $7.5 million option for 2014. Even if the Blue Jays
pick up the option, he might be a trade target as a first baseman or DH.
Kendrys Morales
Justin Morneau James Loney Adam Lind
Left field: Speed or power?
If you are looking to improve run production, you look to the corners of the
field: first and third base, left and right field. Like first base, left
field was an offensive abyss for the Rangers in 2013.
Among AL players with at least 400 plate appearances in the outfield, David
Murphy’s .656 OPS ranked 32nd of 34. Murphy was supplanted as the regular
left fielder by Craig Gentry for the final 10 days of the season when the
Rangers rallied. Gentry has a legitimate offensive weapon in speed and his
defense is top-tier, but questions remain about his ability to contribute
enough offense to be a regular, let alone a run-producer.
This might be the one spot on the field the Rangers could fill internally,
either by re-signing Nelson Cruz and moving him across the field, or by
giving Gentry and Engel Beltre, a left-handed hitter, a chance to split time.
There is also the possibility of moving Ian Kinsler here.
Both Gentry and Beltre are speed guys with excellent defensive abilities.
Beltre is the one minor league position player who might — might — be ready
to contribute in the majors. He’s also out of minor league options. Beltre
has power potential, but did not produce any results in his brief time in the
majors this season.
Gentry
Engel Beltre
Perhaps the top two free agents on the market — Shin-Soo Choo and Jacoby
Ellsbury — are both excellent outfielders and would fit nicely in the Rangers
’ lineup as leadoff men, but they are probably out of the club’s price
range. Both are looking at deals in excess of $15 million per year. That
would eat up at least half of the Rangers’ available dollars. It would also
require some shuffling of outfield responsibilities.
It would be difficult to make it fit and fill all the other holes.
There will also be great interest in seeing if Miami will consider a
Giancarlo Stanton deal, but the drop in Profar’s value after 2013 may make
it hard to construct a worthwhile package — even if emperor Jeffrey Loria is
willing to be fleeced.
Catcher: McCann can
There would seem to be a clear-cut pecking order here: Brian McCann. A.J.
Pierzynski. Everybody else.
McCann appears to be the Rangers’ top free-agent target. He’s a left-handed
hitter with power and a powerful voice inside the clubhouse and on the field.
He’s liable to command $15 million a year, which would also eat up a huge
portion of the Rangers’ available money, but if the club is going to spend
big, it would prefer to spend big up the middle of the diamond.
McCann can hit in the middle of the lineup and might be more ideal as a No. 5
hitter than was Pierzynski. McCann, 30, is seven years younger than
Pierzynski. He has a .350 career on-base percentage which would make him more
of a fit for the disciplined approach of hitting instructor Dave Magadan than
Pierzynski’s swing-at-everything style.
If McCann gets dollars above the Rangers’ range, though, Pierzynski would be
an excellent fallback. It’s likely the Rangers’ could bring back the
Pierzynski-Geovany Soto duo for less than $10 million total.
