[Toronto Sun]Insane to trade Vinsanity: GM
NEW RAPTORS general manager Rob Babcock said it would be insane to consider
trading Vinsanity at this point. The Raptors have missed the playoffs two
seasons in a row and many fans, as well as some NBA insiders, believe it is
time to jettison the talented Vince Carter.
Carter has been criticized increasingly over the years for not exhibiting
leadership qualities or having a profound ache to win.
Babcock, however, counts himself as a Carter fan.
GREAT TALENT
"My intentions would not be to trade Vince. He's a great talent, I'd love
to see what he can do with this new team, with a new coach and with our
philosophy," said Babcock, while adding that, ultimately, nobody in the NBA
is untradeable.
"I want Vince Carter on this team, to see what he can do. Everybody I know
who has talked to Vince feels he is a quality person. I think Vince is a guy
we can build around. He has had a lot of different coaches (Butch Carter,
Lenny Wilkens and Kevin O'Neill) over the past several years.
"And it's difficult when you keep changing styles and systems to get some
continuity, and we plan to have some continuity. I'm very hopeful he will
buy into our philosophies."
Babcock said that he plans to sit down with Carter, pick his mind and,
hopefully, develop a good, working relationship -- even though Carter made
it be known earlier this spring that he was hoping the club would hire
Hall of Famer Julius Erving as the new GM. Babcock insists he is not offended.
"Absolutely not," he said. "Vince doesn't know me. So why would I expect him
to get overly excited about Rob Babcock? I'm not a household name.
Julius Erving is a tremendous person and tremendous basketball player and
had an unbelievable career. I don't begrudge Vince at all."
