The Vince Carter rumour mill is starting to churn full bore.
According to an ESPN report yesterday citing unnamed NBA sources, the Raptors
all-star is so disenchanted with the recent hiring of general manager R
ob Babcock and his selection of 6-foot-11 centre Rafael Araujo with the No.8
pick in last week's draft, that Carter's agents have presented a list of trade
scenarios to the Raptors.
That list reportedly contains four to six teams that he would agree to be
traded to.
"He wants out desperately," the ESPN quotes a source as saying. "He doesn't
like the direction of the team."
"I really don't know anything about that (report)," Babcock said last night
from Minnesota. "I don't know where that came from. I had a good conversation
with Vince and nothing's led me to believe that's changed.
"Until he comes in and tells me he wants something, that's what I'm going to
go on."
The new GM, who was roundly booed by season ticket holders at the Air Canada
Centre on draft night, both when he was introduced and when he selected Araujo,
has had two meetings with Carter as well as a conversation with the all-star's
agents.
He said last week that after an informal chat with the former North Carolina
star, he felt they were "on the same page."
Babcock would not divulge the specifics of his conversation with Carter's
agents and also said a request for a trade wouldn't be granted unless he was
satisfied with the players he would get back.
Carter is due to make about $11 million (U.S.) this season, his seventh in
Toronto. The Raptors would have to take back a matching salary or salaries in
a trade.
