Daily Spin: Toronto Raptors May Finally Become The Phoenix North

With the impending signing of Hedo Turkoglu, the Toronto Raptors will make
the biggest splash of this summer so far, and perhaps the signing would
symbolize a major shift in the makeup of the Raptors.
With a new coaching structure in place, and an emphasis on fast-break
basketball that would finally be touted as the style of play for the
fledgling franchise, Bryan Colangelo seems to have found the answer to
Toronto's offensive problems, but what this potential signing does to the
rest of the Raptors squad is still yet to be seen.
The signing of Turkoglu would mean the Raptors renouncing their rights to
their existing free agents – Shawn Marion, Carlos Delfino and Anthony
Parker. It would also mean that the makeup of the Raptors bench would be
thoroughly different. Roko Ukic, Humphies, new addition Reggie Evans, and
possibly restricted free agent Pops Mensah-Bonsu would be the mainstays of
the bench.
Not too much of a strong bench, but if Toronto can at least find one or two
quality shooters who can defend the perimeter and the pick and role, than
perhaps the Raptors will look at that avenue.
Another possibility would be a sign-and-trade of either Anthony Parker or
Carlos Delfino, or both to a contender (Delfino to Orlando and Parker to
Cleveland), so the Raptors would have to consider those options as well.
What the signing of Turkoglu means is that Colangelo's vision of an offensive
fast-running team is finally coming into place.
Chris Bosh is enthusiastic about the Turkoglu signing, even going as far as
to praise the move by Colangelo on his twitter.
The potential starting five of Bargnani, Calderon, Bosh, Derozen and now
Turkoglu would be possibly potent lineup, with a bench that has much to be
desired for.
It is now looking more likely that the Raptors would implore the run and gun
fast-break style of play under the tutelage of the new coach, Jay Triano.
With Colangelo at the helm, fast-break basketball is usually cornerstone of a
Colangelo-led team.
Raptor fans would have to hope that the Raptors can actually live up to their
promise, and with the additions of Evans, Turkoglu, and Derozen, perhaps
Colangelo can finally find the necessary pieces of molding the Raptors into
the kind of team he envisioned since his arrival in Toronto back in 2006.
Let's wait and see if the new experiment really works.
