4. Alex Torres LHP With high profile names like David Price, Jeremy Hellickson and Matt Moore in the system over the past few years, nobody talks about LHP Alex Torres. Torres was originally acquired from the Angels in the Scott Kazmir trade that also brough 2B/SS Sean Rodriguez to Tampa. That alone is going to be a key factor for Torres if he hopes to have a big league career as a starting pitcher. He appeared in four big league games out of the bullpen down the stretch and continued to struggle with his command, so watch that as an x-factor for Torres going into the 2012 season. He'll likely continue to get reps in Triple-A, but with such an established big league rotation, Torres might make more of an impact in the bullpen first. Tim Beckham SS Beckham is a very interesting case and a guy that's proven tough to rank, since he was the first overall selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. He's had some tough seasons since then, but is still just 21 years old and is coming off a career year split between Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham. He showed glances of his "5-tool talent" this year, hitting .271 with 12 HR and 17 stolen bases in a career high 131 games. He showed a higher slugging percentage, and much better efficiency on the base paths, and looked like a confident player when I saw him play with both Triple-A Durham and the Surprise Saguaros down in the Arizona Fall League. There are plenty of concerns remaining over whether or not Beckham can remain at shortstop, or if he will take a B.J. Upton-like career path, and wing up in the outfield. Either way, Beckham's beginning to cash in on his tools, and the upside is still very high for this young hitter. He should spend the majority of 2012 back with Triple-A Durham, but could see time in Tampa as an injury fill in, or perhaps even as an offensive injection into the lineup. Alex Colome RHP Alex Colome also flies under the radar in Tampa, but that's partly because he hasn't maintained the same kind of outstanding K rates as the top pitching prospects in the system. Colome posted strong strikeout numbers in rookie ball and Class-A, but wasn't able to sustain that at two higher levels this season. He split the year between Class-A+ Charlotte and Double-A Montgomery, posting a 3.82 ERA over 157.2 innings pitche. However, he struck out just 123 batters while issuing 72 free passes. He saw both his K/9 and BB/9 rates progress in the wrong direction in 2011 and will have to work to correct that next season. Either way, he'll be pitching in Double-A at age 23 and will give the Rays another high upside young arm in the system. Taylor Guerreri RHP Guerreri was one of the most talked about high school arms prior to the 2011 draft, so it's no surprise that he was taken in the first round. The Rays had a boat load of picks in the early rounds, and Guerreri is the highest profile player they picked. He's hit 97 MPH with the fastball, and also throws a 12-to-6 curveball and a cutter. He'll have to work on developing his changeup as he adapts to the pro game, but Guerreri has the prototypical pitcher's body, good arm action and clean mechanics that should allow him to repeat his delivery well into games.
