Real MADRID Casillas – 6.5 – Not pressurised in the first half, the iconic goalkeeper made some decisive blocks at the start of the second as Lyon took hold of the game. Was left exposed by his defence on the goal. Sergio Ramos – 6.5 – Pushed forward superbly in the first half, effectively acting as a deep lying winger. Was a different player at the start of the second, when his passing became sloppy at times and his eagerness to push on made his neglect his defensive role. Albiol – 6.5 – Showed early signs of nervousness in the second half by giving away a needless corner kick. This came after a very good first half performance, during which time he did not allow OL near the home goal, covering well and making no errors. Garay – 7 – The steadiest of the back four in a defensive sense, Garay went about his task in a workmanlike manner in the first period. Found life tougher after the break, when Lisandro came to life. Still, a steady performance. Arbeloa – 6 – Not as offensively minded as Ramos but still managed to spend a fair portion of time in the OL half, though it was not as dangerous. If the left-back wasn’t as effective pushing forward, he looked more disciplined at the back, despite some uneasy moments. Lass – 6.5 – Solid during the first half, his form was less wavering than of many of those in the home team, who produced a Jekyll and Hyde performance. Granero – 5.5 – Played a big role in los Blancos’ first half dominance, winning possession back with regularity due to his pressing but started the second period in hopeless form, eradicating the good of his previous industry. Unsurprisingly replaced. Guti – 7 – Orchestrated play in the first period, producing a wonderful ball over the top for Ronaldo’s goal. A similarly astute pass nearly released Higuain just before the break, but the striker was squeezed out. Ronaldo – 7 – Unplayable in the first half at times, the influence of ‘CR9 ’ waned after the break. Showcased some outrageous touches and was not aided by his team-mates, who ironically chose to shoot with the Portuguese better placed on at least two occasions. Kaka – 6 – Looked somewhere near his best as Real had the game by the scruff of the neck in the first period. Danced easily past three challenges before releasing a shot on target but was far more limited after the break, when a drilled shot wide perhaps should have found the target. Higuain – 4.5 – Has been brilliant in La Primera this term, but should be considered the main villain of the peace at the Bernabeu this season. Missed an open goal after rounding Lloris when Lyon were rocking, a moment that ultimately proved decisive in the match. Substitutes Van der Vaart – 5.5 – Failed to stamp his authority on the match during his time on the park. Raul – N/A – Likely to be a sad end to the future legend’s Champions League tale. M. Diarra – N/A – Came on with only a few minutes remaining. LYON Lloris – 7.5 – Called into action within 20 seconds of play commencing and rarely made a slip all night. Will feel he should have done better on Ronaldo ’s goal, which passed through his legs, but his handling under pressure was faultless. Reveillere – 6 – Utterly roasted in the first half by Ronaldo, and was sitting on a mark of around 4 after 45 minutes. Rallied brilliantly after the break, rarely allowing his opposite number any real opportunities to beat him. Cris – 8 – Another figure in the Lyon side to make an uncertain start, the Brazilian defender was in magnificent form for the final 70 minutes and is probably one of the big reasons the French side progressed. Won countless headers and was strong in each challenge. Boumsong – 7 – Arguably the pick of the Lyon defence in the first half, he was withdrawn at the break. While his cohorts in the opening 45 looked uncertain, he got several decisive touches and perhaps did enough to put Higuain off by sliding back when the Argentine had the goal gaping. Cissokho – 6.5 – Bundles of energy in the second half after a difficult opening 45 minutes, during which he was regularly exposed to Sergio Ramos’ raids down the flank. Got the better of the battle after the break though. Toulalan – 7.5 – In the first half he struggled to get near the ball, but in the second the dogged anchoring midfield was switched back into the centre of the rearguard. Rather than looking a fish out of water, he looked totally at home, stabilising the back four superbly in Boumsong’s stead. Govou – 6.5 – The best of Lyon’s forward players in the first half, he was one of the few Gones to remain at a relatively constant level throughout. Govou can be pleased with his contribution, the best moment of which was a low cross to Makoun, which the midfielder failed to turn home. Makoun – 5 – A victim of Puel’s half-time purge, the Cameroonian ace didn’ t enjoy a great night. Sloppy in possession during the first period, he also missed OL’s best opening. Pjanic – 7 – The hero of the hour for les Gones, the teenager looked a little tentative at times but settled into the game. A wonderful free kick nearly picked out Cris in front of goal, but instead he struck the decisive blow himself. Delgado – 8 – Previously something of a misfit at Stade Gerland, the turnaround in the Argentine’s game has been remarkable. Worked back well with Ramos after an uneasy start and got the better of the in-form full-back in the second period. Instigated the goal with a clever pass to Lisandro. Lisandro – 7.5 – Isolated in the first period, ‘Licha’ was reduced to scampering after hopeful balls forward. Lyon’s record signing came into his own after the break, holding the ball up superbly at times and never giving the home defence a moment’s peace. Set up the goal but did waste a great chance to cap a memorable night late on. Substitutes Gonalons – 7 – Very active in the centre of the park, breaking up a great deal of play. Kallstrom – 7.5 – Was involved in the build-up to the goal, the Swede remains an unsung hero for les Gones. Ederson – n/a – Given a burst at the end, during which he worked back well.
