Was Bogar stealing Yankee signs? No one will say
Yankee manager Joe Girardi and Red Sox first base coach Tim Bogar got into it
in the fourth inning last night, though it's not exactly clear why. There is
speculation that Girardi was accusing Bogar of stealing signs, but no one
will speak to the issue.
"I'm not going to comment on that. That's baseball men being baseball men.
It's something I thought I saw and we'll just leave it at that," Girardi
said.
Bogar was just as tight-lipped.
"That's between me and him. It's a baseball thing. Heat of the moment or
whatever it was. He just had something to say and I answered him back," Bogar
said.
Sox manager Terry Francona addressed the issue -- sort of.
"I thought Joe was just checking on the family. I think those guys, when they
haven't seen each other for a while, just ask how things are going," he
deadpanned. "Bogey said everybody was okay."
Pressed on whether the Yankees were accusing Bogar of stealing signs,
Francona was abrupt.
"They could have. I really don't care. You might be better off asking them,"
he said.

Caught stealing?
NEW YORK -- Even with the benefit of talking to both parties, it's still not
entirely clear what was going on in the top of the fourth inning when Yankees
manager Joe Girardi and Sox first base coach Tim Bogar were jawing at each
other. There's a possibility that Girardi was accusing Bogar of stealing
signs, though that's speculation at this point.
"I don't know what was going on," Bogar said. "I just heard him yelling at me
from the dugout. That's about it. I don't know what he was talking about. I
just reacted to what he said to me."
Asked again, Bogar said, "Honestly, I was standing there, I heard him say
something and I answered what he had to say to me."
He continued by saying, "What did he say? That's between me and him. It's a
baseball thing. Heat of the moment or whatever it was. He just had something
to say and I answered back."
Girardi was no more illuminating on the topic than Bogar was.
"Baseball men being baseball men," Girardi said. I'm not going to get into
it."
Bogar said, though they had played against each other in their playing days,
they do not know each other well. He added that there was no prior history
between the two parties.
But his manager, Terry Francona, did offer up an explanation for what they
were saying to each other in the fourth when asked why they might have been
barking at each other.
"I didn't think so," Francona said, with a straight face. "I thought Joe was
just checking on the family. Usually I think those guys when they haven't
seen each other for a while ask how things are going. Bogey said everybody's
OK at home."
When asked specifically if Bogar might have been accused of something, like
stealing signs, Francona said, "They could have. I really don't care. You'd
probably be better off asking them."
