The veteran knuckleballer, placed on the disabled list July 21 with a lower back strain that has since healed, is experiencing soreness in his left calf stemming from sciatic nerve irritation. Following a 40-pitch bullpen session, Wakefield faced outfielder Josh Reddick and infielder Chris Woodward under the surveillance of general manger Theo Epstein, pitching coach John Farrell and manager Terry Francona. Wakefield, who celebrated his 43rd birthday earlier this month, was asked to cover first base several times during the workout. "He threw the ball great," Francona said. "His calf is not 100 percent, that's fairly obvious, but it doesn't affect him when he pitches." "Pitching-wise, everything is fine," Wakefield said. "It's just a matter of when they're going to let me pitch in a live situation. My arm was in great shape before I got hurt. I did a lot of hard work during the offseason, and this season I've been able to maintain that strength. "Today was a big step. I don't know what's in store next, but we'll find out." How Wakefield recovers will go a long way toward determining the next step of his rehabilitation. "We've got to keep that strength going in the right direction," Francona said. "I think it's going to be important to see how he bounces back after running around out there. We'll see how he responds, then try to come up with a little more of a game plan as to what we do next. "We don't want to make a mistake and pitch him too quickly, but we definitely think he can get outs." In other injury news, shortstop Jed Lowrie (ulnar neuritis) was scheduled to undergo an electromyography (EMG) examination on Monday in Phoenix, Ariz. The inspection will test the nerves in Lowrie's troublesome left wrist, which has landed him on the DL twice this season. -- BOSTON _ Red Sox rehabbing pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka is scheduled to throw bullpen session at the organization's spring training facility in Fort Myers, Fla.
