PHILADELPHIA -- Brad Penny sparkled in his San Francisco debut, allowing five hits in eight innings Wednesday night as the Giants defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-0.
Juan Uribe and Aaron Rowand hit consecutive homers in a three-run sixth inning to help the Giants win for only the fourth time in their last 15 games at Citizens Bank Park.
Signed by the Giants on Monday after Boston released him and he cleared waivers, Penny looked nothing like the pitcher who went 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA for the Red Sox. Despite not having pitched since Aug. 21, when he surrendered eight runs and 10 hits in four innings to the Yankees, Penny permitted just two Phillies to reach scoring position. He also coaxed two double-play grounders and walked just one batter while improving to 9-4 lifetime against Philadelphia.
Held scoreless by rookie left-hander J.A. Happ (10-4) through four innings, the Giants broke through in the fifth inning as Nate Schierholtz doubled leading off and scored on Andres Torres' two-out single.
Ryan Garko drew a one-out walk in the sixth before Uribe connected with a hanging 1-2 curveball for his ninth home run of the season and fifth in his last 14 games. Rowand equaled his 2008 total of 13 homers by driving Happ's next pitch into the left-field seats.
The Giants' fourth set of back-to-back homers this season increased their total to 96, two more than they accumulated last year.
