CHICAGO _ With Tim Wakefield returning to the mound on Saturday, the Sox'
rotation will have more depth and ability to give pitchers a day off down the
stretch in preparation for a possible postseason berth.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona and pitching coach John Farrell have spoken
with all pitchers with a plan moving forward. Francona mentioned it could be
beneficial for Josh Beckett and Jon Lester if they feel like they need an
extra day.
Since Wakefield will be pitching, rookie Junichi Tazawa will work out of the
bullpen and serve as the backup if Wakefield's outings are cut short due to
discomfort. Plus, the Sox expect Daisuke Matsuzaka, who made a rehab start
for the PawSox on Friday night at McCoy Stadium, to return soon.
Dice-K was originally set to return to the Sox' rotation on Sept. 9 against
Baltimore, but Francona mentioned Friday there's a possibility he could make
one more minor-league appearance for Single-A Lowell since the Spinners have
earned a postseason berth.
