Red Sox GM Theo Epstein said last week that while Marco Scutaro is the incumbent shortstop, Jed Lowrie could challenge for playing time in spring training. Manager Terry Francona didn't get that memo. "Scutaro's our shortstop," he said this afternoon at a press conference before the Boston BBWAA dinner at the Westin Copley. In Francona's mind, Lowrie is a super utility man because he can play four spots and switch hits. "(Lowrie) gives us something not a lot of teams can say they have. A switch hitter than can play first, second, third or short and play a lot. He can play for a week, he can play it for a day, he can play it or two weeks. That at some point is going to probably save us. How many times have you seen where everybody stays healthy?" he said. Lowrie, on the other side of the room, said he considers himself an everyday player but realizes the situation. "The Red Sox aren't a team that will have a lot of spots open," he said. "The big thing for me is being healthy again, which I am. I'll come to camp and compete and see what happens." Clay Buchholz, Ryan Kalish, Darnell McDonald, Tim Wakefield and Anthony Rizzo were on hand, too. Rizzo, who was traded to San Diego in the Adrian Gonzalez deal, was hanging out with Casey Kelly in Sarasota, Fla., when he learned about the trade.
