The righthander was examined by a specialist in Charlotte on Wednesday and received a cortisone injection in his lower back. Dr. Craig Brigham also told Buchholz that his condition was muscle-related and should subside. "They said there was nothing on the nerve, just a stress reaction on the vertebrae and it was causing the muscle in the side of my back to fire a little bit," Buchholz said. "They said it was definitely just a muscular thing as far as the hurting was and that's basically all I got out of it." Buchholz will do some strengthening exercises and hopes to play catch as early as Sunday. "As soon as I can't feel it he said I can go form there. He said there was not case of me hurting myself long-term if I had to pitch through it. It's just going to take until I'm comfortable throwing," he said. "I don't know when that's going to be but hopefully it's sooner than later." Buchholz has not pitched since June 16. Once he is healthy, he is looking at at least two weeks to get his arm back in shape and surely will need a minor league start or two. The odds of his returning this month would seem long. But the good news is he should emerge from this episode without any long-term effects.
