Manuel Margot, of (19) Short-season -- (前半段跳過不翻) As the Red Sox tried to emerge from the wreckage of a last-place finish in 2012, they did so with a mission of building a contender for 2013 in a fashion that did nothing to jeopardize what appeared to be a very promising future. With a talented ensemble of minor leaguers reaching the upper levels, the team signed seven free agents—none of whom required the sacrifice of a draft pick—to compete at a time when those prospects were expected to be in the finishing stages of their development. The idea was to construct a competitive team for 2013 while buying time for the arrival of what general manager Ben Cherington described as “the next great Red Sox team.” Rather unexpectedly, the 2013 Red Sox ended up being a great team. The return to form of a core that included David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester, Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz was buttressed by strong performances by virtually every player whom the Red Sox added. The result was a team whose strong performances ran more than 25 deep, a versatile and deep roster that ultimately proved the best team in baseball, winning 97 games and marching through October for a World Series championship, the franchise’s third in a decade. Yet as captivating a run as the major league squad offered, the activity beneath that surface proved nearly as compelling. The Red Sox enjoyed a year of striking progress in their farm system, with top prospects taking steps forward in lockstep.
