Volquez's knee injury not serious
Righty advised to pitch winter ball; Cueto may join him

ST. LOUIS -- The Reds got positive news on pitcher Edinson Volquez -- his
sore knee isn't serious.
An MRI exam performed on Saturday in Cincinnati confirmed that Volquez has
tendinitis in his left knee. The right-hander was scheduled to take his
normal offseason rest for a couple of months anyway, so it's not expected to
be a factor long term.
Before Volquez left St. Louis on Friday, manager Dusty Baker spoke with him
and rookie Johnny Cueto about pitching winter ball in their native Dominican
Republic. Both pitchers reached their career highs this season in innings --
Volquez had 196 and Cueto had 174 -- but Baker encouraged them to pick up
some innings at the end of the Winter League seasons.
"I want them to do what they did last year," Baker said. "It worked for them,
big time. You look at the case of Cueto, and he had never been into September
before. He was still throwing the ball pretty good. He'll be better next
year, because he'll know what it's like when he gets there."
Cueto threw 31 2/3 innings last winter, and Volquez worked 8 2/3 innings. The
Reds would obviously have a say in limiting how much they pitch for their
winter teams.
"When they came to Spring Training this year, both of them were ready," Baker
said. "Cueto made the team because he was ready."
Volquez said he would represent the Dominican Republic in the 2009 World
Baseball Classic, and it's possible that Cueto could join him.
